To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/signup\/?utm_campaign=Yahoo-Licensed-Content&amp;utm_source=yahoo&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Supply Chain Dive newsletter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Supply Chain Dive newsletter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Cargo volumes at the Port of Long Beach have remained robust in 2025, despite tariff uncertainty, although the outlook is muted for the remainder of the year, port executives said during <a href=\"https:\/\/polb.com\/port-info\/news-and-press\/port-of-long-beach-cargo-volumes-steady-through-october-11-07-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a Friday media briefing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a Friday media briefing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Through the end of October, the port handled 8.2 million TEUs, up 4.1% from the same 10-month stretch in 2024, its busiest year on record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe are on track to end the year relatively even with the record setting 9.6 million TEUs that we moved last year,\u201d said CEO Mario Cordero during the briefing. \u201cJust like last year, we are moving more cargo than we did during the pandemic and we&#8217;re doing it with no congestion and disruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Cargo frontloading in the face of a slew of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-status-canada-mexico-china-eu\/743577\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new tariffs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">new tariffs<\/a> from the Trump administration has kept volumes robust at the Port of Long Beach this year, according to COO Noel Hacegaba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cAnd that frontloading trend continued, has continued through this year, and that has been the primary reason why we have seen record levels of cargo volumes,\u201d he said, noting that several surges created \u201ca series of artificial peaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Notably, the port\u2019s two busiest months of the year came in January, the same month Donald Trump was inaugurated, and July, the month before a 90-day pause on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/us-install-country-specific-tariffs-aug-7\/756535\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:country-specific reciprocal duties;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">country-specific reciprocal duties<\/a> expired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe challenges were many, and there&#8217;s no doubt that many companies and their workers suffered,\u201d Cordero said. \u201cBut cargo volume is turning out to be just as high this year as it was last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Although annual cargo volumes have remained strong, the Port of Long Beach and others may face a slowdown in the next two months, primarily because most holiday goods were brought in early via frontloading, according to data from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The projected decrease in cargo volumes across U.S. ports tracked by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cStore shelves are well stocked and the effect on prices has been minimized, largely thanks to retailers taking steps like frontloading imports during times of low or delayed tariff increases or absorbing the costs themselves,\u201d Jonathan Gold, VP of supply chain and customs policy at the NRF, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/with-shelves-stocked-imports-should-see-slowdown-in-november-and-december\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a Nov. 7 press release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a Nov. 7 press release<\/a>. However, the association is forecasting a 2.3% decline in cargo for the full calendar year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Entering 2026, Cordero expects consumers to begin feeling larger tariff impacts as shippers more aggressively hike prices to pass along the cost of levies. Despite this, he projected \u201ca moderate increase in cargo in 2026,\u201d adding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/us-china-trade-truce-donald-trump-xi-jinping-apec\/804233\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a recent consensus agreement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a recent consensus agreement<\/a> between the U.S. and China could offset some of the tariff burden and support volume growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe do expect an increase from cargo from China,\u201d\u00a0Cordero said. \u201cBut nevertheless, keep in mind that in terms of the years ahead, the real question is how much of that reliance of manufacturing that presently is in China will move to other regions of the world, more specifically, to Southeast Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Looking nationally, the NRF and Hackett Associates are projecting a deeper cargo volume trough in the first quarter of 2026 amid ongoing tariff machinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThese conditions make market forecasting highly uncertain,\u201d said Ben Hackett, founder of Hackett Associates, in the Nov. 7 release. \u201cOur trade outlook is for a small decline in imports this year compared with 2024 and a further, larger decline in the first quarter of 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Editor\u2019s note: This story was first published in our Logistics Weekly newsletter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/link\/5237\/?utm_campaign=BottomArticle-SupplyChain-Logistics17092021\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sign up here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Recommended Reading <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This story was originally published on Supply Chain Dive.
