In California, that answer might be up for debate.

Right now, USDA considers a small family farm one bringing in less than $350,000 a year before expenses. That threshold hasn’t changed since 2013.

But does that number make sense for California, where even a relatively small operation might bring in more revenue than that?

That’s the question coming before the California State Board of Food and Agriculture on November 3rd.

According to CDFA, the board will discuss developing a statewide definition of a small farm.

And that matters. Farm classifications can influence which producers are targeted for certain grants, assistance programs, and other resources.

CDFA Secretary Karen Ross says small farms make up the majority of California’s farms, but the federal classification may not adequately reflect operations supplying schools, farmers markets, and local food systems.

The November 3rd meeting is open to the public in Sacramento and available via Zoom.
