Federal prosecutors on Monday announced the arrests of more people in California accused of voting illegally in a U.S. election.<\/p>\n
Six people arrested include foreign nationals from Fresno, Kings, Sacramento, Solano, Stanislaus and Tulare counties. <\/p>\n
All were accused of illegally voting in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of California said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese complaints reflect the seriousness with which the United States government strives to protect the privileges of American citizenship,\u201d U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said in a statement. \u201cThe right to vote is one of the most fundamental of those privileges, and its theft by noncitizens will be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n
If convicted, the defendants would face a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. <\/p>\n
Those accused of voting illegally in KCRA 3\u2019s coverage area include: <\/p>\n
Rosa Bento Silva Anderson, 26, a Portuguese national residing in Turlock. Anderson will make her initial appearance in federal court on Nov. 2 in Fresno.Janelyn Stewart, 38, a Philippine national residing in Vallejo.Meryll Joy Quirong Costi, 36, a Philippine national residing in Sacramento, was also accused of illegally voting in the Nov. 8, 2022, midterm election. Costi is scheduled to make her initial appearance in federal court on Nov. 2 in Sacramento.<\/p>\n
Another announcement from prosecutors in Southern California announced charges against six people in Los Angeles County accused of illegal voting. <\/p>\n
Last month, federal authorities charged more than two dozen foreign nationals accused of illegally voting<\/a>. <\/p>\n A 68-year-old Sacramento resident who was among those charged told KCRA 3<\/a> he had thought he was eligible to vote because he had a REAL ID.<\/p>\n Trump administration appeals to Supreme Court<\/p>\n The new announcement comes as President Donald Trump’s administration appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court after an appeals court rejected a request for California to set aside 20,000 ballots from people the federal government suspects may not be citizens. <\/p>\n The federal government says those ballots should not be counted until the voters\u2019 status can be verified.
