California<\/a> voters have reelected U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia<\/a>, returning an out gay immigrant and one of Democrats\u2019 leading investigators to Congress as the party has won greater power to scrutinize President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n

Garcia defeated Republican Brian Burley in California\u2019s 42nd Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, which called the race at 11 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. Garcia had 62 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n

“Lawyer up,\u201d Garcia, who will become the most powerful gay man in Congress as he takes the gavel as chair of the House Oversight Committee, wrote on X Tuesday night as it became clear Democrats<\/a> will control the House next year.<\/p>\n

The former Long Beach mayor has served as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee since June 2025<\/a>. His rise put an openly gay lawmaker in a prominent position to question administration officials and contest Republican investigations.<\/p>\n

Garcia\u2019s oversight work has included pressing for information about the Epstein Files and corruption. He also demanded answers from the Trump administration last year over Andry Hern\u00e1ndez Romero, the gay Venezuelan asylum-seeker sent to a prison in El Salvador. He traveled there in 2025 and subsequently sought answers from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about Romero\u2019s treatment and whereabouts.<\/p>\n

Born in Peru, Garcia became Long Beach\u2019s first out LGBTQ+ mayor before winning a 2022 election to Congress. His reelection secures a third term in the House.<\/p>\n

The campaign also introduced him to a changed constituency. As The Advocate reported in May<\/a>, California\u2019s redrawn congressional map placed Huntington Beach in the 42nd District, bringing a city known for its conservative leadership into Garcia\u2019s electoral territory.<\/p>\n
