Southern Californians may soon be able to ditch the bumper-to-bumper freeway grind<\/a> for a faster ride along the coast \u2014 by boat.<\/p>\n

Long Beach is moving ahead with plans for a high-speed ferry network that would connect beach cities from Malibu <\/a>to the South Bay, offering commuters and visitors an alternative to crawling along the region\u2019s notoriously clogged freeways.<\/p>\n

The proposed service \u2013\u2013 known as Pier-to-Pier<\/a> \u2013\u2013 would connect seven coastal destinations: Long Beach, San Pedro, Redondo Beach Harbor, Venice Pier, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica Pier and Malibu Pier.<\/p>\n

Long Beach officials announced this week that the project has secured an operational partnership with Harbor Breeze, a local maritime operator that would help launch and maintain the ferry network.<\/p>\n

\u201cPier-to-Pier has established an operational partnership with Harbor Breeze, a seasoned Long
Beach based California\u2011licensed maritime operator, to support the launch and long\u2011term
reliability of its high\u2011speed coastal ferry network,\u201d the city wrote in a memo.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThis partnership also leverages Harbor Breeze\u2019s current position as a commercial tenant in San
Pedro and downtown Long Beach at Rainbow Harbor,\u201d they further wrote.<\/p>\n

Rainbow Harbor is expected to serve as the network\u2019s initial Long Beach docking point, with Belmont Pier and Alamitos Bay being considered for additional stops.<\/p>\n

The city has already approved an $8.9 million budget to support two projects aimed at building and upgrading Belmont Pier.<\/p>\n

Once operational, the ferry network would also connect passengers with other transportation options, including \u201cLA Metro (E and A Lines), Santa Monica\u2019s Big Blue Bus, LAX shuttle networks, and local coastal shuttles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s memo comes after the City Council unanimously agreed 6-0 on April 7 <\/a>to take formal steps in establishing the Pier-to-Pier system.<\/p>\n

And the proposed boat rides could offer a serious time savings compared with driving.<\/p>\n

A trip from Malibu to Santa Monica, which typically takes more than 32 minutes by car, is expected to take roughly 18 minutes by ferry.<\/p>\n

This project also comes ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games<\/a> in Los Angeles, where officials are viewing the boat service as another mode of transportation. <\/p>\n
