The event, called San Jose Roots, mixed Aztec dance, Mexican folklórico, African-American theater and Vietnamese performance with hands-on pioneer-era crafts like candle dipping and butter churning.

According to The Mercury News, Mahan was expected to be joined by History San Jose CEO Bill Schroh and members of the San Jose City Council to officially start the countdown toward the anniversary of the city’s founding. The date traces back 250 years to when El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was established as the first civil settlement in what was then the Spanish colony of Alta California, the outlet reported. Mahan previewed the moment himself a day earlier, posting on X that “San Jose is turning 250! Tomorrow at San José Roots, we’ll unveil the official logo and kick off a yearlong celebration.”

A Free Day of History, Food and Dance

San Jose Roots is organized by History San José, which hosts the event every November in downtown San Jose. The nonprofit describes it as a free program meant to provide a platform for cultural exchange, storytelling and artistic expression, according to the History San José event listing. The listing noted that attendees could enjoy hands-on activities from the Spanish and Mexican eras, community booths from local historical and cultural organizations, and tours of the Gonzales/Peralta Adobe and the Carmela & Thomas Fallon House, alongside live cultural performances.

Scheduled performers included Aztec dancers Calpulli Ocelocihuatl, the Folklórico Nacional Mexicano de Elena Robles, the Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble, and the Viet Steps dance troupe, the Mercury News reported. Families could also try their hand at lasso lessons, candle dipping and butter churning, pulling kids and adults alike into a taste of the region’s Spanish- and Mexican-era past.

Standing Inside San Jose’s Oldest Building

Part of the day’s draw was the chance to walk through the Gonzales-Peralta Adobe, which the Mercury News described as the oldest surviving structure in San Jose, dating to the late 18th century. It is a tangible link to the same era that produced the pueblo itself, grounding Saturday’s festivities in a building that predates the city’s American statehood by decades.

The idea of launching the 250th-anniversary festivities around this time of year isn’t new. A 2023 Mercury News column had floated the idea that events could start in November 2026 and run for the entire following year, a timeline that lines up with Saturday’s kickoff. That same column recalled San Jose’s bicentennial in 1977, when more than 600 people gathered at the old City Hall on North First Street for the dedication of a plaque marking the city’s 200th birthday.

What Comes Next for the Semi-Quincentennial

San Jose Roots is intended as the opening chapter of a celebration expected to include signature events throughout 2027 alongside the city’s regular cultural festivals, per the Mercury News report. The countdown Mahan and city officials were set to start Saturday points toward Nov. 29, 2027 — the actual 250th anniversary of the pueblo’s founding — giving San Jose more than a year to build out programming before the milestone date arrives.

San Jose kicked off a yearlong 250th-birthday party Saturday at noon in San Pedro Square, where Mayor Matt…

[29
88,90,89
post-522120","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news
["GET
