A man died Saturday, Nov. 7, after becoming unresponsive while police were escorting him up a steep embankment following a theft investigation in Fullerton, authorities said.

Fullerton police officers responded to a business in the 2200 block of North Harbor Boulevard around 4:50 a.m. after receiving a report of a theft in progress involving two men and a woman, according to a statement from the Fullerton Police Department.

The three suspects reportedly left the business with merchandise and were attempting to enter a waiting vehicle when officers arrived.

All three fled on foot down a steep embankment and into dense brush near a golf course, police said.

Officers pursued the suspects and found one man and the woman hiding in the brush. Both were taken into custody without the use of force, while the second man escaped and remained at large, police said.

Officers escorted the woman back up the embankment without incident. The man, however, struggled to navigate the steep terrain and dense vegetation, police said, repeatedly falling to his knees and managing only a few steps at a time.

Officers decided to remove his handcuffs to help him climb the slope, but as they discussed it, they noticed he had become unresponsive, though he was still breathing, according to police.

Officers began providing medical aid, including administering Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and requested assistance from the Fullerton Fire Department.

When officers determined the man was no longer breathing, they began CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until firefighters arrived and took over medical care, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An initial review, including body-worn camera footage, indicated that officers did not use force during the encounter, police said. They said relevant video, audio recordings and images will be released within 45 days through a critical incident community briefing.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office was notified and sent investigators to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, police said.

The man’s identity has not been released.

A man died Saturday, Nov. 7, after becoming unresponsive while police were escorting him up a steep embankment…

[36
163,165,164,7,723,138,2628,100,611,136
post-522160","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-anaheim","tag-anaheim","tag-anaheim-headlines","tag-anaheim-news","tag-california","tag-crime","tag-crime-and-public-safety","tag-fullerton","tag-news","tag-orange-county","tag-top-stories
["GET
