FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — ABC News anchor JuJu Chang has reported on true crime across the country for 20\/20. Now, the show’s latest episode, airing Friday, brings Chang to Fresno.<\/p>\n
“All of it was this saga that took multiple trips to report out,” Chang told Action News on Thursday.<\/p>\n
She is pulling back the curtain on a crime that rocked the Valley. Debbie Dorian was 22 and a recent Fresno State graduate when her father found her dead in 1996.<\/p>\n
The crime led investigators on a decades-long chase.<\/p>\n
“We spoke to your DA, Lisa Smittcamp, and talked about how she was able to pick up the ball after the cold case and bring this to … justice, to end up having the murderer put behind bars,” Chang said.<\/p>\n
Now, 29 years after the investigation began in Debbie’s northeast Fresno apartment, Chang will take viewers to the crime scene.<\/p>\n
“This is the nature of true crime, but it often happens in everyday places, right?” Chang said. “It happened in a small apartment complex in Fresno. When you go there, it’s sort of nondescript…”<\/p>\n
JuJu and her team also traveled to the South Valley, visiting the street corners of four sexual assaults.<\/p>\n
“Another is assaulted here, while waiting for a bus,” Chang says in the 20\/20 episode airing Friday.<\/p>\n
The assaults in Visalia played a critical role in catching Nickey Stane in 2019 and tying him to Debbie’s 1996 death.<\/p>\n
“Visalia, which was sort of the skeleton key that unlocked the investigation,” Chang said. “There was a case-to-case genetic match, and that was how they were able to keep the investigation hot, even after the murder had gone cold in some ways.”<\/p>\n
“When you were here in Fresno, did you have any experiences, any interactions with folks where you could really tell the gravity of this crime?” Action News asked.<\/p>\n
“I mean, you know, the most harrowing survivor is Jane Doe #1,” Chang said.<\/p>\n
That survivor sat down with JuJu, finally revealing her name and showing her face for the first time.<\/p>\n
Viewers will hear from her on Friday.<\/p>\n
“She talked about the decades of impact this sexual assault had on her,” Chang said. “She was like this young up-and-coming college freshman. She had the whole world, you know, as her oyster, her whole life in front of her.”<\/p>\n
In between all the interviews, Chang had time to stop by Action News. We have covered the case closely from the crimes decades ago to Stane’s conviction earlier this year.<\/p>\n
“I know we partnered on this one, and you guys were great,” Chang said about Action News. “It was really lovely to hang out with you and see you in your station in Fresno.”<\/p>\n
Chang spoke about her newfound connection to the Valley and the survivor.<\/p>\n
“This conviction was an incredibly healing moment for her. She has a job. She has a child,” Chang said. “She’s doing really well, and I could not be more proud of her.”<\/p>\n
