Duolingo is saying no, non, nein, and nyet to San Francisco.<\/p>\n
The language learning app is headquartered in Pittsburgh, which isn\u2019t exactly known as a booming hub of startups and venture capital. But Duolingo said in a post on LinkedIn that it will never open a San Francisco office<\/a>, in part because it helps them maintain the culture they want.<\/p>\n \u201cWe built our headquarters here because we believe you don\u2019t have to chase trends or sky-high rent prices to do meaningful work,\u201d Duolingo wrote<\/a> in a blog post last year. \u201cFor us, Pittsburgh isn\u2019t a \u2018backup plan\u2019 to the Bay Area.\u201d<\/p>\n The company\u2019s other U.S. offices are in Detroit, New York City, and Seattle.<\/p>\n Startups can thrive all across the world \u2014 and not just in Silicon Valley \u2014 but the pressure to build near the Bay Area looms large enough that we\u2019re hosting a TechCrunch Disrupt 2025<\/a> panel<\/a> about this very topic.<\/p>\n \u201cPittsburgh isn\u2019t trying to be the next Silicon Valley \u2014 and that\u2019s exactly the point,\u201d the company wrote.<\/p>\n
