{"id":53926,"date":"2025-11-15T03:05:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T03:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/53926\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T03:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T03:05:10","slug":"join-us-in-demanding-budget-accountability-in-long-beach-on-tuesday-november-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/53926\/","title":{"rendered":"Join Us in Demanding Budget Accountability in Long Beach on Tuesday, November 18\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join\u00a0your fellow\u00a0CFA members next week for our\u00a0rally on November 18 at the CSU Board of Trustees\u00a0(BOT)\u00a0Long Beach\u00a0meeting.\u00a0Let CSU\u00a0trustees know that their behavior\u00a0prioritizing CSU executives over faculty and students\u00a0cannot\u00a0continue:\u00a0register to attend\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id=cW_hyenoC0-XWVeazb-qTogLkGJwbyxNg-4e1g-LXtNURE5MNU9BWDRPM1FGSVc4OFNGSDNHOTVRWS4u&amp;route=shorturl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>\u00a0and register for public comment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.calstate.edu\/csu-system\/board-of-trustees\/Pages\/public-comment.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>\u00a0(virtual comment available)!\u00a0.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0rally and\u00a0meeting\u00a0are\u00a0critical for our union to show up and show out,\u00a0given the lack of\u00a0financial\u00a0accountability at the CSU!\u00a0First, the CSU\u00a0BOT\u00a0will\u00a0discuss\u00a0giving raises to CSU executives.\u00a0Second, they\u00a0intend to\u00a0remove a key policy that currently prevents them from increasing an incoming president\u2019s pay by more than 10%\u00a0above the\u00a0previous\u00a0president\u2019s salary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0clear:\u00a0Chancellor Garc\u00eda and the CSU BOT\u00a0are\u00a0explicitly asserting that their priorities are\u00a0to\u00a0increase presidents\u2019\u00a0salaries\u2014which already average half a million dollars annually, not including their housing and automobile allowances.\u00a0To help legitimize the move,\u00a0outside\u00a0consultants\u00a0will be presenting their own curated reports\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0BOT\u00a0that conveniently justify\u00a0exorbitant\u00a0salaries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the same group of trustees, including Chancellor Garc\u00eda, who claim they have no money to continue funding instruction\u00a0of key programs.\u00a0This is the same BOT who\u00a0have\u00a0made drastic recommendations for mass faculty and staff layoffs, increased workload demands, and program closures\u2014all while increasing student fees and tuition costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Reminder-to-Attend-BOT-png.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31968\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>While the chancellor continues to sell this tragic story that\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0never any budget for students, faculty, or staff, she personally profited handsomely.\u00a0In 2024, she made $1,062,000 when factoring in her deferred payment and outside pay as vice chair on the Educational Testing Service Board of Trustees. CSU vice presidents hired within the last fiscal year made on average $314,000.\u00a0Compare this to the\u00a0roughly $71,000\u00a0average pay that faculty receive\u2014an average that appears higher after management laid off hundreds of lower time-base lecturers who made significantly less. (You can read more about the ongoing cycle of executive salary increases\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.calfac.org\/csu-board-of-trustees-continues-to-approve-exorbitant-compensation-to-csu-executives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not only do we need to protest\u00a0any\u00a0executive salary increase that may happen during this\u00a0meeting,\u00a0we\u00a0must also ensure that the chancellor spends the 0%\u00a0interest\u00a0state loan in a way that makes a difference for our stakeholders. The chancellor has entirely disregarded our requests to use the money to restore programs and premature jobs, though we have been demanding this for months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an email to all faculty sent in October, Garc\u00eda stated that she would use the funds to provide one-time bonuses for CSU employees, but a one-time bonus falls significantly short of adequately compensating faculty for their labor. It is not calculated in our base\u00a0salary\u00a0nor does it change our pension\u00a0basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whenever managers have offered one-time bonuses\u00a0in the past,\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0been used as a tactic for refusing to offer real salary increases at the bargaining table. Our salaries must keep pace with inflation\u00a0and more.\u00a0One-time compensation does not build lasting change; base pay increases do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t\u00a0let the chancellor\u00a0and BOT\u00a0sell us short!\u00a0They are more than eager to give presidents and other higher up managers an obscene amount of money but are unwilling to even pay us a fair wage.
