San Diego State (7-2) returns home looking to rebound from a rare 38-6 loss at Hawaii. The Aztecs continue to lean on one of the nation’s top defenses, ranking sixth in total defense (262.9 yards per game) and fourth in scoring defense (13.1 points).

SDSU’s ability to contain Boise State’s balanced attack will be central, especially with the Aztecs struggling offensively and converting just 31.9% of their third downs, which ranks 127th nationally.

Boise State (6-3) comes off a bye following a surprising 30-7 home loss to Fresno State. The Broncos will be shorthanded, with quarterback Maddux Madsen, leading receiver Chris Marshall and left guard Jason Steele all out. Redshirt sophomore Max Cutforth, a former walk-on, will make his first career start. Boise State still averages 428.0 yards per game, but its red zone defense has been an issue, ranking 119th nationally.

San Diego State’s efficiency inside the 20 could be decisive. The Aztecs score on 88.9% of their red zone trips, while Boise State allows scores on 90.6% of opponent opportunities.

Weather may add another wrinkle, with heavy rain forecast as an atmospheric river approaches Southern California. Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said his focus is on preparing for “an absolute slugfest” against an SDSU team unbeaten at home.

Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.
