SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014 Ever since the murder\u00a0of her son, Greg Najee Grimes, three years ago outside a nightclub, Deborah Grimes has said it\u2019s her advocacy work fighting against gun violence that has helped her through the tragedy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to be able to have purpose,\u201d she said. \u201cTurn that pain into purpose and\u00a0do something meaningful with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law, Assembly Bill 1127, that bans handguns\u00a0that use a striker firing system, such as with Glock handguns, versus a hammer firing system

Grimes said her son was a wonderful father, a mentor to many and cared about the community he lived in, and the community had great respect for him.<\/p>\n
The gun Grimes said was used to kill Najee was a modified handgun using a switch device, turning it into a machine gun, allowing it to fire up to 30 rounds in 2 seconds.<\/p>\n
She said she was happy to hear about Gov. Gavin Newsom signing a new law, Assembly Bill 1127, which bans handguns\u00a0that use a striker firing system, such as with Glock handguns, versus a hammer firing system.<\/p>\n
\u201cAB 1127 will save lives,\u201d Grimes said. \u201cI\u2019m telling\u00a0you,\u00a0we were just ecstatic when we got the information that the governor had signed it just a couple of days ago here. And we have been a part of that movement, working with Assemblymember [Jesse] Gabriel, and also\u00a0the other Assembly members who had signed onto that legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin Davis owns Davis GunWorx in Sacramento. He believes the new law is misguided.<\/p>\n
\u201cCriminals\u00a0are criminals because they don\u2019t follow the law,\u201d Davis said. \u201cSo, they\u2019re going to still get what they want, do what they want to do. But the\u00a0law-abiding\u00a0citizens, the ones that you\u2019re harming [with the new law] and the ones they\u2019re taking the rights away from.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also said Glock and Glock-style guns make up a big percentage of most gun store sales in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll do our best to stay open,\u201d Davis said. \u201cBut I mean, this could devastate the gun business in California.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ban begins next year, but stores are allowed to sell stock inventoried before the start of 2026.<\/p>\n
But Davis said that doesn\u2019t help as the news has already created a rush on the guns.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m already noticing and seeing a lot of my distributors already out,\u201d Davis said. \u201cAnd so now it\u2019s kind of, once they\u2019re out, they\u2019re out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever happens, Grimes said she knows the fight to save lives due to gun violence is an ongoing effort for her and her family.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn honor of our son, so yes, that will forever be a part [activism] of our lives,\u201d Grimes said.<\/p>\n
