Frequently compared to the likes of John Prine<\/a> and Kris Kristofferson<\/a> \u2014 both of whom mentored him at various points \u2014 Snider wrote about \u201chow poor people sometimes cope with pain and hardship,\u201d he told<\/a> the New York Times in 2009. \u201cA little drugs here, a little sex here, a little denial there.\u201d<\/p>\n In a prolific recording career that stretched three decades, Snider made albums for labels owned by Prine and by Jimmy Buffett<\/a> and for his own company, Aimless Records. Yet to many he was best experienced onstage, where he\u2019d thread his songs into a kind of running monologue about his rough-and-tumble life.<\/p>\n Among his best-known tunes were the rollicking \u201cBeer Run\u201d; \u201cCan\u2019t Complain,\u201d about a guy with \u201cnothing to lose \u2019cause there is nothing to gain\u201d; and \u201cAlright Guy,\u201d which opens with a scene in which a friend catches him leafing through \u201cthat new book with pictures of Madonna naked.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSaid she\u2019d never pegged me for a scumbag before,\u201d he sings, \u201cShe said she didn\u2019t ever want to see me anymore \/ And I still don\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/p>\n In his 2014 memoir, Snider told a shaggy-dog story about the time Garth Brooks summoned him to a studio to help him record a cover of \u201cAlright Guy\u201d in the guise of his alter ego, Chris Gaines.<\/p>\n \u201cI was already starstruck before Garth walked up and introduced himself,\u201d Snider wrote. \u201cHe said, \u2018I thought you had red hair,\u2019 because he\u2019d seen me on the \u2018Austin City Limits\u2019 television show, and I\u2019d dyed my hair red for that show. It wasn\u2019t supposed to be red. It was supposed to be dark brown. My plan was to look like John Fogerty, but instead I ended up looking like the guy from the movie \u2018Dumb and Dumber.\u2019\u201d (Brooks didn\u2019t release the cover, though Snider said the country superstar sent him a check for $10,000 anyway.)<\/p>\n Todd Daniel Snider was born Oct. 11, 1966, and grew up in Oregon before making his way to Texas and then Nashville. His debut album, \u201cSongs for the Daily Planet,\u201d came out in 1994 via Buffett\u2019s Margaritaville label; it closed with a motor-mouthed acoustic ditty called \u201cTalkin\u2019 Seattle Grunge Rock Blues\u201d in which he lovingly lampooned the era\u2019s alternative rock boom:<\/p>\n Now, to fit in fast, we wear flannel shirts<\/p>\n We turn our amps up until it hurts<\/p>\n We got bad attitudes, and what\u2019s more<\/p>\n When we play, we stare straight down at the floor<\/p>\n A critics\u2019 fave from the get-go, Snider earned rave reviews with 2004\u2019s \u201cEast Nashville Skyline,\u201d whose highlights include a characteristically wordy depiction of the culture wars then roiling America in the wake of 9\/11 \u2014 \u201cConservative, Christian, Right Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males,\u201d it\u2019s called \u2014 and \u201cThe Ballad of the Kingsmen,\u201d in which he contemplates the meaning of the lyrics to \u201cLouie Louie.\u201d<\/p>\n Among the many other LPs he went on to release were 2009\u2019s \u201cThe Excitement Plan,\u201d which was produced by Don Was, and a 2012 collection of songs by Jerry Jeff Walker<\/a>, the country-folk songwriter who\u2019d served as a crucial influence on him.
