Using her monthly newspaper, the Presidio Sentinel, Patty brings the battles to her readers as she builds coalitions to tackle felony-stupid government.”

SDCTA said one of her recent victories was successfully opposing a large homeless center in Middle Town proposed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. Currently, Ducey-Brooks is in court battling the city of San Diego’s recently imposed monthly fee for trash collection.

“I’m very grateful for the award from the Taxpayers Association,” said Ducey-Brooks, “This group has educated San Diegans for decades and helped save the region’s citizens billions of dollars.”

SDCTA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization known for promoting accountability, cost-effective and efficient government and opposing unnecessary new taxes and fees.

Also at its recent 29th annual Goldens awards event on Nov. 12, SDCTA presented a Golden Watchdog award in grassroots advocacy for excellence in public discourse to Paul Krueger, who retired as a TV news reporter in 2023 to become a community activist and a regular contributor to The San Diego Union-Tribune and Times of San Diego.

Starting in 1989, he spent 32 years at KNSD-TV NBC 7 San Diego as a reporter and producer for investigative, consumer and medical reporting teams.

Today, Krueger heads a volunteer grassroots citizens group called Neighbors for a Better San Diego. The group, based in San Diego’s Kensington-Talmadge community where Krueger lives, advocates for sensible growth, realistic planning and coherent transit strategies. It has opposed the mayor’s plan to advance increasing residential neighborhood density by allowing developers to build multi-unit auxiliary dwelling units, also called ADUs, without parking on single-family lots.

SDCTA cited Krueger’s recent commentary published in the San Diego Union-Tribune with the headline, “What mayor calls ‘failure’ sounds like ‘good government’ to many.”

JMI Sports connects ESET with SDSU Athletics in new partnership

San Diego-based JMI Sports, a media and sponsorship sales development company that manages collegiate multimedia rights, has announced a partnership between San Diego State University Athletics and ESET, a global cybersecurity firm with its North American headquarters in San Diego.

The partnership will unite sports, technology and education with high-impact gameday marketing with a financial investment in SDSU’s student-athlete development program that will advance ESET’s commitment to cybersecurity education and career readiness, a statement said.

“We are proud to have connected SDSU with ESET in a partnership that will bring unlimited value,” said Nick Maranda, VP of partnerships JMI Sports. “ESET’s commitment to education, innovation and local investment makes them a powerful new ally for SDSU Athletics and the Aztec community.”

As part of the partnership, ESET will make a financial contribution to Aztecs Going Pro, SDSU’s flagship career development initiative for student-athletes. The program provides personalized professional coaching, hands-on learning and civic engagement opportunities to help student-athletes build meaningful post-graduate career plans and lasting professional networks.

ESET’s support will strengthen the program’s ability to prepare student-athletes for life beyond sports, reinforcing the company’s commitment to upskilling, education and building a future-ready workforce, a statement said.

According to JMI Sports, Aztec fans will also see ESET’s presence throughout SDSU football and men’s basketball home games, including branded “Third Down Stops” and “Block of the Game” segments. These activations will bring ESET’s core offerings of defense, resilience and protection into the fan experience in a fun and engaging way, while also positioning the company in front of SDSU’s tech-savvy, locally loyal audience.

“We are proud to partner with ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity headquartered right here in San Diego,” said John David Wicker, SDSU director of athletics. “ESET’s investments both on and off the field will help us continue to build on our one-of-a-kind Aztecs Going Pro program that attracts and prepares our student-athletes for athletic, academic and professional success.”

For ESET, the university represents a natural partner in its continued investment in regional talent development, market growth and engagement with the next generation of tech leaders, a statement said.

“At ESET, we are committed to making a difference in the communities where we operate, and we have an established history of local engagement and cybersecurity awareness in San Diego,” said Ryan Grant, country manager, ESET U.S. and Canada.

“This partnership with SDSU Athletics expands on this commitment to support both the athletic and academic excellence of a university located in the heart of our home city. We believe student-athletes are uniquely equipped with the discipline, drive and leadership skills that make them standouts in the workforce.

“We see this partnership as the start of something special where we look to invest in SDSU Athletics’ people, their passions, purpose and career paths.”

JMI Sports is the multimedia rights holder for SDSU Athletics and operates locally as Aztec Sports Properties.

In addition to SDSU, JMI Sports holds multimedia rights partnerships with the University of Kentucky, University of Utah, University of California Los Angeles, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh, Harvard University, DePaul University, Columbia University and University of California at San Diego, as well as joint-ventures with the University of Georgia and University of Notre Dame.

JMI Sports also represents multimedia rights for several collegiate conferences, including the Ivy League, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference, Patriot League and Atlantic 10, and serves as third-party sales representation for premier sports properties, venues and events, including the Breeders’ Cup, Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, Rose Bowl and the Penn Relays.

JMI Sports was founded in 2006 by CEO Erik Judson and technology entrepreneur John Moores, former owner of the San Diego Padres.

Gallup: Trust in the news media at new low of 28%

Americans’ confidence in the news media has edged to a new low, with just 28% expressing a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in newspapers, television and radio to report the news fully, accurately and fairly, according to a recent Gallup survey.

The latest 28% figure is down from 31% in 2024 and 40% from five years ago, Gallup said.

In addition, seven in 10 U.S. adults now say they have “not very much” confidence (36%) or “none at all” (34%) in the fairness of the news media’s reporting.

When Gallup began measuring trust in the news media in the 1970s, between 68% and 72% of Americans expressed confidence in reporting. However, by 1997, public confidence had fallen to 53%.

Media trust remained just above 50% until it dropped to 44% in 2004, and it has not risen to the majority level since. The highest reading in the past decade was 45% in 2018, which came two years after confidence had collapsed amid the divisive 2016 presidential campaign.

The latest 28% confidence reading, from a Sept. 2-16 poll, marks the first time the measure has fallen below 30%, Gallup said.

Among Republicans and Democrats:

Republicans’ confidence, which hasn’t risen above 21% since 2015, has dropped to single digits (8%) for the first time.

Democrats’ trust in the news media was measured at 51%, which is a repeat of the lowest previously recorded in 2016.

In addition, Gallup said there is a clear generational divide in trust in the news media over the past three years, as noted by Editor & Publisher, a journalism industry trade publication.

In the most recent three-year period, spanning from 2023 to 2025, 43% of adults aged 65 and older trusted the news media, compared with no more than 28% in any younger age group.

Given younger Democrats’ relatively low confidence in the media, overall trust could decrease further in the future unless Republican trust rebounds, said Gallup.

With confidence fractured along partisan and generational lines, the challenge for news organizations is not only to deliver fair and accurate reporting but also to regain credibility across an increasingly polarized and skeptical public, Gallup said.

Rick Griffin is a San Diego-based public relations and marketing consultant.
