Police are investigating after a report of a possible drowning ended with a UC Berkeley student hospitalized Friday.

The Berkeley Scanner, which first reported the incident, reported that the Berkeley Fire Department found the student at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house on Prospect Street around 11:30 p.m.

The student was “last reported in critical condition,” the Berkeley Police Department told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Police, firefighters and fraternity officials did not immediately respond to Berkeleyside’s inquiries.

The fraternity’s national organization told the Chronicle that the Cal chapter is cooperating with local authorities.

A Cal spokesperson acknowledged the reports of a possible drowning but said that “privacy laws and university policies preclude us from discussing or confirming confidential student matters.”

Cal’s “thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time,” Adam Ratliff, who handles “crisis communications” — industry jargon for media inquiries about possibly scandalous incidents — for Cal said in a prepared statement.

“We offer free and comprehensive psychological services to all students,” Ratliff wrote. “For any students in need, please contact Counseling and Psychological Services located at UHS. We encourage students to seek support should they need. There is also information online regarding coping with traumatic events.”
