It feels good,&#8221; Phoenix Hotel managing partner Isabel Manchester said. &#8220;When we first made the decision to close, I felt a pit in my stomach. But now it&#8217;s nice seeing so many people wanting to celebrate the legacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/hotel-chip-conley-midlife-18680650.phphttps:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/hotel-chip-conley-midlife-18680650.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chip Conley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chip Conley<\/a> opened the hotel in the late 1980s, following the advice of concert promoter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/chronicle_vault\/article\/Celebrating-Bill-Graham-s-legacy-on-death-s-10049705.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bill Graham;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bill Graham<\/a>. From there, it became a hub for touring musicians, drawing acts such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/robin-williams-david-bowie-20780499.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:David Bowie;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">David Bowie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/bottlerock-pearl-jam-bradley-cooper-19478914.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Pearl Jam;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Pearl Jam<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/neil-young-pulls-music-from-amazon-21095078.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Neil Young;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Neil Young<\/a> by offering free tour bus parking and massages for tour managers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But despite its place in Bay Area music history, the cultural landmark is scheduled to close at the end of the year due to the hotel&#8217;s loss of revenue since the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"People listen to Preeti Vangani, left, read poetry at the Phoenix Hotel's farewell block party in San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025. Chronicle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;A lot of great memories here,&#8221; 37-year-old Regina Coney, who has been coming to the Phoenix Hotel since 2009, said. &#8220;It&#8217;s very sad to see it go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It&#8217;s bowing out with the same spirit that made it legendary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thursday&#8217;s Tenderloin Block Party: A Love Letter to the Neighborhood was part of a lineup of farewell parties, including a New Year&#8217;s Eve closing party. Chronicle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thursday&#8217;s event also marked the final installment of Poolside Poetry, a monthly poetry, music and dance showcase hosted by the San Francisco nonprofit Decentered Arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rhea Joseph and Liz Cahill have been hosting the series at the Phoenix Hotel for two years, providing emerging creatives a platform for their art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no space that can replace this,&#8221; Cahill said. &#8220;We bring people back and we also bring people in for the first time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A woman named Sarah shows off her new ink at the Phoenix Hotel's farewell block party in San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025. Chronicle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alexander Spaulding and Sarah Liu fall under the latter category, and only discovered the venue a few years ago, despite having grown up in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We wish we found it sooner,&#8221; Spaulding, 32, said. &#8220;We do really love it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Liu added that the hotel particularly stands out to her because of its location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Especially in this neighborhood, I don&#8217;t think a lot of people come here for events too much,&#8221; the 30-year-old said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s great to be here.
