All Clarkston schools were put in shelter-in-place mode Wednesday according to a message sent to parents.<\/p>\n
The order was lifted at 11 a.m., according to a second district message. Both messages were signed by Superintendent Shawn Ryan.<\/p>\n
At noon, his all-clear message was released to the media.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am happy to report that the Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office has given us the \u201call-clear.\u201d With that said, we have lifted the shelter-in-place order. All of our schools have resumed classes and operations as usual,\u201d Ryan wrote.<\/p>\n
He went on to explain that he\u2019d received a call from an Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s lieutenant, whom he did not name, telling him deputies had been called to assist federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers \u201csearching for two individuals in the area of Sashabaw and Clarkston Roads and advised that we secure our buildings,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cAs we would with any police activity near our schools, we put our buildings into shelter-in-place as a precautionary measure. This is done to keep our students and staff safe inside our schools \u2026 We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
The original message said district officials were alerted that ICE officers were \u201cin pursuit of multiple individuals\u201d in Clarkston.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, out of an abundance of caution, we are moving ALL BUILDINGS to a shelter-in-place at this time,\u201d the first message said.<\/p>\n
That meant classes continued as usual with indoor recess and limited access to buildings according to the first message.<\/p>\n
The superintendent\u2019s message to parents was not shared on social media or the public portion of the district\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
District spokeswoman Kelly Allen said the district can directly message families via phone calls, text messages and email so there\u2019s no need to make social media posts about emergencies.<\/p>\n
\u201cSocial media is something we use for all the great things that are happening in our district,\u201d she said. \u201cIf we didn\u2019t have a direct way to contact our families, we would use social media.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shortly after the shelter-in-place was lifted a rumor about a student being detained by ICE went viral.<\/p>\n
Allen said no students \u201cwere involved in any way, shape or form. They never even came into our buildings. They were in the woods behind one of our buildings. That\u2019s why we took those precautionary measures.\u201d<\/p>\n
