PHOTO: Kern County DA

The DA’s office said on June 6, 2011, Humberto Guizar-Figueroa and his brother, Vicente Guizar-Figueroa, with guns drawn, entered the home of a business owner who was home with his wife and daughter.

The family was held at gunpoint as Humberto threatened to shoot the family dog if they did not keep quiet. The DA’s office said the business owner was ordered to drive them to his business while a third unidentified man held his family hostage.

Unknown to Humberto, additional family members were present and escaped out the back door to call the police, according to the DA’s office. Humberto got out through the back door, but police detained him.

According to the DA’s office, Vicente confessed to police that they watched the victim for six days to plan the crime, including going into the jewelry store to do reconnaissance.

The DA’s office said a few months prior, on February 9, 2011, the men committed a similar crime in the state of Washington. Humberto and a crew posed as workers from an energy company. The robbers held the family at gunpoint in their home while one robber took a family member to the jewelry store they owned, taking a total of $370,000 worth of jewels.

Vicente was convicted of multiple felonies in Washington, however Humberto still has an arrest warrant pending in Washington state.

On June 12, 2014, Humberto pled no contest to three felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and three use of a firearm enhancements. He was sentenced to 29 years and 8 months in state prison. Humberto was eligible for a parole hearing about 14 years into his sentence of a violent crime because he was under the age of 26 at the time of the crime, thus he was entitled to a youthful offender’s parole hearing under California law.

On November 18, 2025, the BPH conducted Humberto’s initial parole hearing. At the hearing, the commissioners questioned Humberto about the facts, motivations, and consequences to the victims related to his crimes. In addition, the BPH focused on his recent efforts to participate in rehabilitative programming related to substance abuse and anger management. Humberto was reluctant to provide details about the crime and his involvement with gangs in prison.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office asked the BPH to deny parole. The BPH found that Humberto was not suitable for parole and issued a three-year denial.

Vicente Figueroa was deemed eligible for youthful parole by BPH in May of this year, according to the DA’s office.

<img decoding="async" alt="Vicente Guizar-Figueroa. Youthful parole laws are offender-focused, disregarding the consequences imposed at sentencing, the pain inflicted on victims, and the risk posed to the community with each premature release.”

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
