New mapping from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that 15 million pounds of these pesticides were applied statewide from 2018 to 2023 \u2014 a major, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/legal-battles-over-pfas-intensify-as-states-consumers-and-industries-seek-accountability,64485?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unregulated pathway for PFAS to enter environments already struggling with chemical persistence<\/a>.<br \/>\nWidespread Use Across California\u2019s Agricultural Heartland<\/p>\n<p>According to EWG\u2019s analysis of state pesticide-use records, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/epas-second-in-command-sparks-ethics-debate-over-industry-ties,80610?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">52 PFAS pesticide active ingredients<\/a> were applied across 58 counties over six years. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/pfas-enforcement-enters-new-phase-what-will-it-mean-for-industry-science-and-accountability,75353?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. EPA<\/a> has approved at least 66 PFAS pesticide active ingredients, and industry disclosure loopholes mean additional PFAS may be present as inert ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Other jurisdictions are moving faster:<\/p>\n<p>Maine adopted the first statewide ban on PFAS pesticides, effective 2030.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/denmark-experiment-aims-to-eradicate-persistent-pfas-pollutants,1392?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denmark<\/a> banned six PFAS pesticide ingredients in 2025 after linking them to groundwater contamination.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/europes-split-pfas-ban-sets-a-dangerous-precedent,89523?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a> declined to renew the herbicide flufenacet due to risks from its breakdown product, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), now detected in rainwater and surface waters worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>These international actions highlight the widening gap between global scientific consensus and U.S. policy direction.<\/p>\n<p>Ecosystem Implications: Soil, Water, and Wildlife Exposure<\/p>\n<p>The environmental implications extend well beyond agricultural productivity:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterboards.ca.gov\/pfas\/ca_pfas_timeline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Soil Persistence and Declining Soil Health<\/a>: PFAS molecules resist degradation, meaning agricultural soils become long-term reservoirs. Research from UC Riverside shows PFAS can alter soil microbial communities, affecting nutrient cycling and soil resilience.<br \/>\nThreats to Aquatic and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentenergyleader.com\/stories\/chesapeake-bay-restoration-gets-224-million-from-biden-harris-agenda,45051?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Riparian Systems<\/a>: Runoff and infiltration from treated farmland may increase PFAS loads in rivers and wetlands. PFAS may intensify these disparities.<\/p>\n<p>Experts increasingly agree that PFAS pesticides represent a significant and overlooked source of environmental contamination. Without systematic monitoring of PFAS in agricultural soils, groundwater, and crops, California may be locking in decades of chemical persistence.<\/p>\n<p>Non-PFAS pesticides and integrated pest management techniques exist, and researchers emphasize that consumers should not reduce produce consumption.
