{"id":60992,"date":"2025-11-19T22:37:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/60992\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T22:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:37:09","slug":"wealthy-california-town-votes-to-ban-pickleball-over-annoying-popping-noise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/60992\/","title":{"rendered":"Wealthy California town votes to ban pickleball over annoying popping noise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s too much racket!<\/p>\n<p>A wealthy California town wants to ban pickleball because the constant thwack of balls hitting paddles is<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/20\/pickleball-creates-headaches-lawsuits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> too noisy<\/a> for neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>Carmel City Council voted to permanently bounce the<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/02\/pickleball-is-wreaking-havoc-across-the-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> fast-growing sport <\/a>from within city limits earlier this month \u2014 a first-of-its kind move in the Golden State.<\/p>\n<p>Frustrated residents complained that the \u201cpopping\u201d sound of the sport \u2014\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/03\/lifestyle\/pickleball-injuries-are-on-the-rise-but-players-cant-quit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which has spiked in popularity<\/a> in recent years, especially among retirees\u00a0 \u2014 has been echoing through the seaside community and driving them nuts, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/centralcoast\/article\/carmel-moves-to-permanently-ban-pickleball-21193222.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sfgate.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37712373\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/pickleball-player-prepares-smash-ball-113642654.jpg\" alt=\"Pickleball\" class=\"wp-image-37712373\"  \/>Carmel City Council voted to permanently bounce the fast-growing sport from within city limits earlier this month. pics721 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>So last month, the city council voted to temporarily ban pickleball from Forest Hill Park, the only space with public courts in the town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Council members Jeff Baron and Hans Buder then hatched a plan to require players to use \u201cquiet\u201d paddles and balls \u2014\u00a0 but residents fired back that folks aren\u2019t likely to follow those rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s gonna be a problem,\u201d Carmel resident Kimberly Edwards said at a city council meeting Nov. 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s going to enforce this? Am I going to have to hear a noise and then call the police?\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s an unrealistic proposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.75;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37712371\" width=\"443\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/forest-hill-park-carmel-ca-115738639.jpg\" alt=\"pickleball court\" class=\"wp-image-37712371\"  \/>Residents of Carmel complained that pickleball is too loud, so the city council banned the sport. John Terri Kratchmer \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>But devotees of the sport said a full-blown ban really puts them in a pickle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to try it with the quiet ball, I think it\u2019s only fair to the players to give that a chance,\u201d pickleball player Barbara Lang fired back.<\/p>\n<p>The city council ultimately voted unanimously in favor of extending the temporary ban and drafting legislation to create a permanent one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the ban will have two more hearings to appeal the ban once it is created.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That\u2019s too much racket!
