LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014\u00a0Barack Obama<\/a>\u00a0is entering the fight for U.S. House control by appearing in a 30-second ad urging California voters to approve a November ballot proposal that could add as many as five Democrat-held\u00a0House seats<\/a>\u00a0in California.<\/p>\n

Proposition 50 would dramatically reshape California\u2019s congressional districts with the intent of adding Democratic seats in Congress. It\u2019s crafted to gain Democratic House control, aimed at offsetting President Donald Trump\u2019s moves in Texas and elsewhere to help win more Republican seats in the 2026 midterm election.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepublicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years,\u201d Obama says in the ad, looking directly into the camera. \u201cYou can stop Republicans in their tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has\u00a0framed the election<\/a>\u00a0as a referendum on all things\u00a0Trump<\/a>, who is unpopular in liberal-leaning California outside of his conservative base. Voting on the proposal\u00a0is underway<\/a>\u00a0and concludes Nov. 4.<\/p>\n

Republicans and other opponents say the proposal amounts to a Democratic power grab that would set aside district lines crafted by an independent commission that was created by voters more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

The duel between California and Texas, the nation\u2019s two most populous states, has\u00a0spread nationally<\/a>. North Carolina Republican legislative leaders\u00a0announced plans<\/a>\u00a0Monday to vote next week on redrawing the state\u2019s House district map, taking up Trump\u2019s call to secure more GOP seats nationwide and resist rival moves by Democrats.<\/p>\n

Republicans hold a 219-213 majority in the U.S. House, with three vacancies.<\/p>\n

If approved in California, it\u2019s possible the new political map could\u00a0slash<\/a>\u00a0five Republican-held House seats while bolstering Democratic incumbents in other battleground districts. That could boost the Democratic margin to 48 of California\u2019s 52 congressional seats, up from the 43 seats the party now holds.<\/p>\n
