Former Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, announced Wednesday that she will not be running for Congress to replace House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco.<\/p>\n
“After thoughtful consideration, I have decided not to pursue a run for Congress,” Breed said in a statement.
Breed, who served as San Francisco’s mayor from 2018 to 2025, stepped away from government in January this year after losing re-election to Daniel Lurie.<\/p>\n
But when Pelosi announced earlier this month that she would not be seeking re-election for California’s 11th Congressional District, it opened up an opportunity for other candidates to throw their hats in the ring.<\/p>\n
In her statement, Breed did not elaborate on the reasons for her decision. Nevertheless, Breed said she remains committed to advocating for Democratic values and the people of San Francisco.<\/p>\n
“I will continue fighting for the people of San Francisco and for the values that define us as Democrats: fairness, dignity, and a future where every community can thrive,” she said. “That work has always been bigger than any one campaign or any one office, and I remain fully committed to it.”<\/p>\n
So far, there are two contenders in the race for Pelosi’s seat — State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and former political staffer Saikat Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti served as chief of staff for U.S. Rep.
