Alameda\u2019s USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum officials invite you to join them at 7 p.m. Saturday as they host Bay Area Latin jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo aboard the USS Hornet.<\/p>\n

Known for his vibrant performances and captivating rhythms, the legendary Escovedo, still going at age 90, has led a rich musical career that beautifully blends salsa, jazz and other influences. Escovedo\u2019s Latin jazz fusion act promises to make for an unforgettable evening celebrating his rich heritage and outstanding musical talent.<\/p>\n

The evening\u2019s music will start with Joey T & Didier Bouvet and Friends, followed by Escovedo. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the museum, and Zina Escovedo will host a sale of Pete Escovedo\u2019s art. Kiwanis Club names new leaders for a new year of service<\/p>\n

The Kiwanis Club of Alameda (KCA) celebrated the start of its new year of service on Oct. 1 by welcoming a new president, new secretary and board of directors to organize its next 12 months of service. Incoming President Laila Grassley designated the theme \u201cHip Hip Hooray\u201d to emphasize the joy and enthusiasm of Kiwanis service to the Alameda community.<\/p>\n

Immediate Past President Dawna Dowdel Dos Santos reflected on her presidency. Serving a total of three years, she oversaw two very successful grant fundraisers in the past two years as well as the distribution of $100,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors and Hope of America awards to local eighth-graders.<\/p>\n

Grassley, the KCA\u2019s new president, inspired members with her three goals: first, to continue fundraising for the club and its foundation; second, to create a signature service project unique to KCA; and third, to thrive as a vibrant club with new members joining our ranks.<\/p>\n

Special recognition for exceptional service during the past year went to Cheri Hadley, who was named Kiwanian of the Year, and Denise Gasti, who received a gold ribbon enhancement to her William Dunlap award, the highest honor of Kiwanis service in the parent club\u2019s California-Nevada-Hawaii district.<\/p>\n
