{"id":64723,"date":"2025-11-22T03:17:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T03:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/64723\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T03:17:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T03:17:15","slug":"141-year-old-galapagos-tortoise-dies-at-the-san-diego-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/64723\/","title":{"rendered":"141-year-old Gal\u00e1pagos tortoise dies at the San Diego Zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gramma, an estimated 141-year-old Gal\u00e1pagos tortoise, died Thursday at the San Diego Zoo, ending a near century-long chapter of what the zoo said was quiet, yet constant ambassadorship to generations of zoo visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The tortoise was among the first group of Gal\u00e1pagos tortoises to arrive in San Diego in 1928, and was the oldest living creature at the zoo at the time of her death, officials said Friday on social media. Legend has it her arrival was welcomed by the zoo\u2019s founder, Harry Wegeforth.<\/p>\n<p>The zoo said staff had been \u201cclosely monitoring her ongoing bone conditions related to advanced age.\u201d The condition had recently progressed, so they made the \u201ccompassionate and exceptionally difficult decision\u201d to euthanize her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is astonishing to consider what Gramma lived through in her lifetime \u2026 as the world around her experienced more than 20 U.S. presidents, two World Wars and two pandemics,\u201d zoo officials said.<\/p>\n<p>She eventually became an icon to zoo staff and guests as she and her fellow tortoises became interwoven with the history of the Balboa Park institution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A zoo visitor plays with a giant Galapagos tortoise named 'Grandma' who is estimated between 120 to 140 years old inside its enclosure at the San Diego Zoo, California on January 13, 2015. AFP PHOTO\/MARK RALSTON<\/p>\n<p>Although the life span of a Gal\u00e1pagos tortoise averages around 35 years, researchers estimate that Gramma was born in 1884.<\/p>\n<p>Speed, another tortoise who joined Gramma at the zoo in 1933, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2015\/06\/19\/sd-zoo-tortoise-speed-dies-150-plus-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">died in 2015<\/a> at the estimated age of 150.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLovingly called \u2018the Queen of the Zoo\u2019 by her care specialists, Gramma observed the creation and evolution of the San Diego Zoo,\u201d zoo officials said in a statement. \u201cA sweet and shy tortoise, she quietly touched the lives of countless people over nearly a century in San Diego as an incredible ambassador for reptile conservation worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate Gramma\u2019s 140th birthday last year, zoo employees made a \u201cbirthday cake\u201d of her favorite foods: romaine lettuce and cactus fruit.
