We spent a Saturday night out in FiDi to test it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">When Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages tore across the outfield to make a spectacular, bottom-of-the-ninth catch in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, every gobsmacked pair of eyes at downtown San Francisco pizzeria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piepunkssf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pie Punks (opens in new tab)<\/a> was glued to the TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Putting aside Giants fans\u2019 enduring hatred for the Dodgers, it was a thrilling moment \u2014 and an unusual scene for 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday in a neighborhood supposedly trapped in the doldrums. Every table was covered in pans of Detroit-style pizza, glasses of natural wine, and tiki mugs filled with tropical cocktails. Per the logic of \u201cthe enemy of my enemy is my friend,\u201d most people seemed to be rooting for Toronto, but a rum-fueled camaraderie prevailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">That a trio of journalists was there to witness this moment was pure serendipity. For every hopping cocktail bar, we found a black hole of womp-womp clamminess that no high-spirited shenanigans could improve. And we reconfirmed that just about everyone who\u2019s out and about downtown at night works in tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">But one other message was just as clear: There is plenty of fun to be had downtown on a Saturday night if you\u2019re willing to look \u2014 and open to embracing the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>10:06 p.m. \u2014 Holbrook House<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">With L.A. having won its second World Series in a row \u2014 sorry, Giants Nation \u2014 The Standard\u2019s team of two reporters and a photographer set out to find more thrills. We wandered over to Holbrook House (1 Sansome St.), an <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/07\/29\/luxe-sansome-street-holbrook-house-will-open-in-downtown-san-francisco\/\" data-post-id=\"9ebeced8-9195-4c3c-86cd-5469f02b74bc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultra-luxe venue<\/a> atop the Montgomery BART Station. The Kranzes were attending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welovesf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">We Love SF (opens in new tab)<\/a>, an annual fundraising gala put on by noted SF booster <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/04\/13\/empire-distribution-ghazi-music-downtown-san-francisco-recovery\/\" data-post-id=\"7de74d36-276f-4aaf-afbe-a34f61474904\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Empire Records<\/a> and attended by wealthy types who want to see the city prosper \u2014 the elite, in other words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Kranz wouldn\u2019t specify how much a ticket cost. \u201cI don\u2019t want to put a number on it,\u201d he said, crushing out his butt and walking back in. As the door opened, the music got briefly louder. The lighting was dim, but an aerialist was visible, as was someone dressed as Little Bo Peep, shepherd\u2019s crook and all. It was a raucous affair for certain, but not one open to unticketed interlopers. Rather than press our faces to the windows, we moved on.<\/p>\n<p>10:58 p.m. \u2014 Pagan Idol<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Hoping to find a party we could get into, we alighted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paganidol.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pagan Idol (opens in new tab)<\/a> (375 Bush St.). Inside downtown\u2019s top tiki bar were four scattered groups and staff who had plenty of time to offer thorough drink recommendations. The Mr. Hanalei ($15), made of a Caribbean rum blend, allspice, orgeat, and lemon, went down almost too easy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">We were sucking down the last of our drinks when the vibe shifted. The software engineer in his mid-20s was part of a group of 25 to 30 people who mostly hang out to play the murder-mystery game <a href=\"https:\/\/bloodontheclocktower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Blood on the Clocktower (opens in new tab)<\/a>. It was only his second time at Pagan Idol. \u201cTruthfully, we mostly hang out in apartments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">They were a sociable gaggle, but there were reminders that <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/09\/06\/don-t-believe-hype-gen-z-drinking-guys\/\" data-post-id=\"93ab561c-9071-4aae-86b9-62a67a973dbe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gen Z doesn\u2019t rage on the regular<\/a>. One of Wang\u2019s friends said the last time they\u2019d convened at the bar, things got a little wild, \u201cbut I\u2019m not sure that I drank anything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Still, people who arrived in San Francisco in recent years have one distinct advantage: blissful ignorance about downtown\u2019s post-pandemic misfortune. \u201cI can\u2019t compare it to what it was like back then,\u201d Wang said, taking a satisfying pull from a rum punch. \u201cI haven\u2019t been here long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11:38 p.m. \u2014 Harrington\u2019s Bar &amp; Grill<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Almost as loud as Holbrook House and more chaotic than Pagan Idol, the drunkest destination turned out to be Harrington\u2019s (245 Front St.). Nominally an Irish pub, it anchors City Hall-sanctioned events, including <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/05\/02\/downtown-hoedown-first-thursdays-mechanical-bull-drag-cowboys\/\" data-post-id=\"5a8edd8a-42f5-45bb-b696-c063547e2972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">First Thursdays<\/a> and the occasional outdoor Valkyries viewing party on Front Street. Almost certainly yes \u2014 and so had quite a few others. Attendees, mostly in their late 20s and early 30s, were hoarse, flushed, sipping out of plastic cups, and largely unable to identify whose birthday it was. A worn-down bartender muttered something about far more people showing up than he\u2019d prepared for, inciting a pang of self-consciousness. We slipped out just before midnight.<\/p>\n<p>12:11 a.m. \u2014\u00a0Old Ship Saloon<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Day-after-Halloween parties and World Series be damned: The evening\u2019s clear theme was birthday celebrations. At the 174-year-old Old Ship Saloon (298 Pacific Ave.), a 5-minute walk up Battery Street, Sarah Judge and Chris Cheng were among a group of about 40 who had made their way over after dinner at La Mar on the Embarcadero. And if that aorta hasn\u2019t been in such good health lately, then Turtle Tower (245 California St.) may be the stent that repairs it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/04\/03\/with-the-rebirth-of-turtle-tower-the-cult-of-chicken-noodle-soup-has-a-new-home\/\" data-post-id=\"35b9f2cd-736e-4147-b775-164986749053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northern Vietnamese<\/a> restaurant, famous for its clear-broth pho, closed its locations one by one during the pandemic, only to revive this year by taking over the former Barbacco space \u2014 and making an eye-popping commitment to serving food until 3 a.m. (Something\u2019s working; <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/13\/turtle-tower-new-location-cow-hollow\/\" data-post-id=\"1c850417-b268-4bab-b1c7-06ff790ce3c3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another Turtle Tower location<\/a> is in the works.)
