SAN JOSE \u2013 Defensemen John Klingberg<\/a> and Timothy Liljegren<\/a> are both day-to-day with injuries and appear to be questionable to play Friday when the winless San Jose Sharks f<\/a>ace the Utah Mammoth in their first road game of the season.<\/p>\n

Klingberg is dealing with a lower-body injury, and Liljegren, another right-shot defenseman, has an upper-body ailment, said Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky, who added that Klingberg\u2019s injury does not involve his resurfaced hips.<\/a> Klingberg had double hip resurfacing surgery<\/a> in December 2023 and returned to the NHL in January with the Edmonton Oilers.<\/p>\n

Both Klingberg and Liljegren were injured during the Sharks\u2019 5-1 loss t<\/a>o the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center on Tuesday, Warsofsky said. Klingberg did not play the final 5:12 of regulation time, and Liljegren did not take a shift in the final 6:13, as the Sharks (0-1-2) lost their third straight game to begin the season.<\/p>\n

Klingberg is on the Sharks\u2019 first power play unit and has a goal and an assist in three games. Liljegren earned kudos for his play during the preseason and the Sharks\u2019 first two games, as his 20:14 in average time on ice is second behind Dmitry Orlov (22:19)<\/a> among all Sharks defensemen.<\/p>\n

The Sharks are scheduled to practice again on Thursday morning before they leave for Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n

If Klingberg and\/or Liljegren are unable to play on Friday, that would likely open the door for either Shakir Mukhamadullin or Vincent Desharnais, or both, to enter the lineup. Mukhamadullin has been a scratch for the Sharks\u2019 last two games, including a 7-6 overtime loss<\/a> to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, and Desharnais has not yet played this season.<\/p>\n

In Wednesday\u2019s practice, Mukhamadullin was paired with Mario Ferraro, and Desharnais was with Sam Dickinson.<\/p>\n

The Sharks were carrying eight defensemen on their active roster as of Wednesday afternoon. After Friday, the Sharks return home and play Sidney Crosby, Erik Karlsson, and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.<\/p>\n

FORWARD LINE SHUFFLE<\/p>\n

Warsofsky shuffled his forward lines during Wednesday\u2019s practice, moving Jeff Skinner and Philipp Kurashev to the top line with Macklin Celebrini, and moving Will Smith to the third line with center Michael Misa and Collin Graf on the right side. Smith started Tuesday\u2019s game on the second line with center Alexander Wennberg and Skinner.<\/p>\n

Smith had three shots on net against the Hurricanes and nearly had a power-play goal in the first period, but finished with a season-low 13:57 of ice time. Smith has three assists in three games this season and is averaging 17:35 in ice time.<\/p>\n

\u201cA little bit perimeter. Need a little bit more from him,\u201d Warsofsky said of Smith. \u201cNeeds to engage a little bit more in the hockey game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graf was a scratch for Tuesday\u2019s game. With him coming back to the third line with Misa and Smith, Ty Dellandrea was moved to the fourth line with Barclay Goodrow and Adam Gaudette. Ryan Reaves<\/a> appeared to be the odd man out, but Warsofsky wasn\u2019t confirming his lineup.<\/p>\n
