Long Beach cinephiles are in for a treat this weekend, when Sean Baker \u2014 the Oscar-winning writer and director of 2024 Best Picture winner \u201cAnora\u201d \u2014 visits the Art Theater for a Q&A about a new project.<\/p>\n

The new film \u201cLeft-Handed Girl,\u201d directed by Tsou Shih-Ching and co-written, produced and edited by Baker chronicles the life of a single mother and her two daughters after they relocate to Taipei and open a night market stall, according to the Art.<\/p>\n

The film is Taiwan\u2019s official submission for the International Feature Film category for next year\u2019s Oscars, where it\u2019s predicted to be a top-five finalist, according to the Art.<\/p>\n

Shih-Ching and Baker have been longtime collaborators. The two co-directed the 2004 film \u201cTake Out,\u201d and later, Shih-Ching produced several of Baker\u2019s films including \u201cStarlet,\u201d \u201cTangerine,\u201d \u201cThe Florida Project\u201d and \u201cRed Rocket.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shih-Ching is making her directorial debut with \u201cLeft-Handed Girl,\u201d which will have a limited theatrical run before its move to Netflix on Nov. 28.<\/p>\n

The Art, meanwhile, will host a screening of the new film on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1:55 p.m. \u2014 and after, Baker will make an appearance for a Q&A about the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Art Theatre Long Beach is thrilled to welcome Sean Baker,\u201d said Kirk Jordan, a member of the Art\u2019s Board of Directors and treasurer, in a Wednesday, Nov. 19 email. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful film.\u201d<\/p>\n
