{"id":74542,"date":"2025-11-29T14:11:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T14:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/74542\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T14:11:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T14:11:12","slug":"how-the-sunset-became-san-franciscos-political-disaster-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/74542\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Sunset became San Francisco\u2019s political disaster zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">It\u2019s been a turbulent year and a half for the Sunset, with a series of dramas that have raised uncomfortable questions: Is the district doomed to political dysfunction, and how much of the recent meltdown is self-inflicted?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">First, there was the saga over Proposition K, which prompted the recall of District 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/09\/16\/san-francisco-joel-engardio-recall-election-results\/?utm_campaign=power_play&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=sfs_newsletter&amp;utm_term={date(%27MM_dd_YY%27)}\" data-post-id=\"d3269933-88c9-4b5d-a826-ba1d66a31a65\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Supervisor Joel Engardio<\/a>. The frustration intensified when Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed political newcomer <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/06\/lurie-picks-29-year-old-former-pet-store-owner-represent-sunset-bitter-recall\/\" data-post-id=\"d3b5525e-f94f-4671-b63a-7d32b74f10bb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isabella \u201cBeya\u201d Alcaraz<\/a> to replace Engardio, only for her to <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/15\/san-francisco-daniel-lurie-isabella-beya-alcaraz\/\" data-post-id=\"9a4f5708-d1e0-4db4-9616-fbf2d530e3ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resign after eight days<\/a> amid <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/10\/san-francisco-alcaraz-daniel-lurie-sunset-supervisor-animal-connection-pet-store\/\" data-post-id=\"14a603bb-ef07-4f5e-b4d5-2b1d433a90a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scandals about her former pet store<\/a>. Before that, two former Sunset supervisors <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/10\/10\/sunset-supervisor-gender-appointment\/\" data-post-id=\"8501c6ee-d937-4e18-8295-312478d72857\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">served jail time<\/a>, and another <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2022\/11\/08\/engardio-leads-mar-but-sf-sunset-supervisors-race-still-too-close-to-call\/\" data-post-id=\"87c984be-65ec-4d73-9993-cfdb30fef682\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost reelection<\/a> amid the city\u2019s public safety crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The leadership void, combined with increasing friction between the city\u2019s broader push toward an urbanist future and the district\u2019s resistance to those changes, has added to decades of discontent in the Sunset District, where many residents say their voices are routinely ignored and their neighborhood dismissed as politically irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Western outerland\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Natalie Gee, a progressive City Hall staffer and declared 2026 D4 candidate (and potential appointee by Lurie), described what has happened recently as \u201can ill-fated political game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cIt is unacceptable for any district in our city to be subject to what has transpired in District 4,\u201d Gee said. \u201cSunset residents did not have a leader that understood their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Lisa Arjes, a Sunset resident who contributed more than $40,000 to the campaign to recall Engardio, said the district has long been considered the \u201cwestern outerland,\u201d as opposed to the more politically active east side.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"block lazyloaded\" style=\"color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 3000 2000'%3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw=='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764425470_641_-S3840x2560-FPNG.png\"\/>Sunset resident Albert Chow said the supervisor vacancy has put the district at a serious disadvantage amid negotiations over Mayor Daniel Lurie\u2019s zoning plan.\u00a0 | Source: Thomas Sawano\/The Standard<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Arjes said the closure of the Great Highway, brought about by Prop. K, was a breaking point for many residents. \u201cI can\u2019t be quiet any longer,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not happy with what the city is doing to me \u2014 not with me or for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">With the D4 seat vacant, residents lack representation as supervisors debate another consequential policy: Lurie\u2019s Family Zoning Plan, which calls for tens of thousands of more housing units over the next several years, including in the largely residential and development-averse Sunset.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Albert Chow, another contender for the D4 appointment, said the vacancy has put the district at a serious disadvantage as supervisors elsewhere secure amendments to the zoning plan that carve out exemptions for their constituents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThat\u2019s completely unfair,\u201d he said. \u201cIf appointed, I have to vote no and come back another day to get those amendments done after hearing from my neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Self-inflicted wounds?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">While many in the Sunset feel abandoned, others argue that the district\u2019s woes are self-inflicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Daniel Ramirez, an Irving Street merchant and organizer of the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/08\/25\/sunset-after-dark-night-market\/\" data-post-id=\"968087c5-45ae-4c25-9300-153d518f8949\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunset After Dark night market<\/a>, said Engardio\u2019s recall was driven by emotion rather than logic, leaving the Sunset without an advocate at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cDistrict 4 lost the right to demand community input when they decided to recall the previous supervisor,\u201d he said. \u201cWe gave up the right to be represented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Lucas Lux, a supporter of Prop. Similarly to the Prop. K scenario, voters citywide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/Timeline-A-look-back-at-Octavia-St-and-the-2680322.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">approved a measure (opens in new tab)<\/a> to replace the freeway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Three decades later, some west-side residents who fought to keep the Central Freeway were reinvigorated by Prop. K, Arjes said. She noted that the Sunset\u2019s victory in ousting its supervisor showed that the neighborhood can\u2019t be taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThe recall shows a very important claim: a victory against billionaire dollars. We needed to win that,\u201d Arjes said. \u201cOtherwise, people would have lost hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Lurie is expected to announce the next supervisor within days. The mayor\u2019s appointment, which poses a tricky situation for him, could shape Sunset politics for years. Lurie has an incentive to find someone with a pro-housing perspective who will support his upzoning plan but who can appease locals who remain outraged over the Great Highway\u2019s closure. That might include putting a referendum to overturn Prop.
