A single light-year is 6 trillion miles.

At the heart of this bipolar nebula is a white dwarf star that cast aside its outer layers of gas long ago. The discarded gas forms the butterfly-like wings billowing from the aging star, whose heat causes the gas to glow.

Schoolchildren in Chile chose this astronomical target to celebrate 25 years of operation by the International Gemini Observatory.

Dunn writes for the Associated Press.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A telescope in Chile has captured a stunning new picture of a grand and graceful cosmic…

[27
43712,40025,43708,756,43710,48,52,51,4423,47,50,49,63,23188,43711,6843,43713,43709,43707,43706,72
post-75137","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-bipolar-nebula","tag-chile","tag-cosmic-butterfly","tag-gas","tag-international-gemini-observatory","tag-la","tag-la-headlines","tag-la-news","tag-light-year","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-headlines","tag-los-angeles-news","tag-los-angeles-times","tag-national-science-foundation","tag-noirlab","tag-operation","tag-outer-layer","tag-schoolchildren","tag-stunning-new-picture","tag-telescope","tag-year
["GET
