WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 A New York City college professor who wrote about ending policing, was appointed by mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani<\/a> to work on community safety issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to announce that I have been asked to join the Mamdani Transition Team<\/a> to work on community safety issues,\u201d Alex Vitale wrote on the social media platform, X. <\/p>\n

\u201cA New Era for NYC.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitale has on his X page that he is the author of \u201cThe End of Policing.\u201d He also teaches sociology at Brooklyn College.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe End of Policing\u201d was published in 2017. The book states that police don\u2019t have citizens and that they shouldn\u2019t combat gangs.<\/p>\n

“In most cities, gang units function as a mechanism for racialized social control,” the book states, according to Fox News<\/a>. “Black and Latino youth are labeled as gang members for hanging out together, while white youth groups are dismissed as harmless.”<\/p>\n

Vitale also teaches courses about African Americans in the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n

The top comment on Vitale\u2019s post asks, \u201cAre you going to work to protect Jews going to their place of worship? Or are Jews not part of the community Mamdani cares about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitale replied to the comment saying, \u201cOf course. My family is Jewish.\u201d<\/p>\n
