{"id":81034,"date":"2025-12-04T07:04:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T07:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/81034\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T07:04:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T07:04:25","slug":"driver-of-tesla-that-went-airborne-in-deadly-southern-california-crash-identified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/81034\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver of Tesla that went airborne in deadly Southern California crash identified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The 37-year-old man who was driving a speeding Tesla Model 3 that caused a deadly multi-vehicle crash in Huntington Beach was identified by authorities on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Tesla driver, who was the lone fatality in Tuesday\u2019s crash, was identified as Huntington Beach resident Ryan Mark Larson by the Orange County Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A dashcam video captured the Tesla going airborne as Larson lost control and sideswiped a car driving in the opposite direction on Heil Avenue at Goldenwest Street around 2:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officers arrived to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/1-killed-multi-vehicle-crash-001430534.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:seven vehicles involved in the incident;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seven vehicles involved in the incident<\/a>, including the Tesla, which had rolled over several times before coming to a rest just east of the intersection, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Larson was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"One person was killed after a multi-vehicle crash in Huntington Beach on Dec. 2, 2025. (George Spaulding)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A driver who was with his young son inside a minivan that was also badly damaged in the crash can be heard in a separate video checking on his son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMalcom, are you OK?\u201d the father asks. The boy responds, \u201cYes,\u201d before the driver describes what happened: \u201cA car just slammed headfirst into the corner of our car,\u201d he says, choking up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Police said the Tesla had been traveling at a \u201chigh rate of speed,\u201d but did not estimate how fast it was going. A witness at the scene believed it was traveling around 100 mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">George Spaulding, who was waiting at a red light, said he saw the car speeding toward him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe saw a car flying up the road and our light had just turned green and we were ready to take off,\u201d Spaulding recalled. \u201cThe car cut over in between the lanes, went on our side of the lane and just flew and hit this dip right over here. It caught air, lost control and flipped over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Three people were transported to the hospital. Authorities confirmed that two Orange County probation officers were hurt after their vehicle was struck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Wednesday morning, the Orange County Probation Department said both officers were recovering. \u201cOne officer was medically cleared at the scene, while the second officer was treated and released from the hospital,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it was unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
