Ads designed to evoke red-hot anger and existential dread are all across the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Billboards and bus shelters proclaiming in bold letters \u201cHumanity had a good run\u201d began appearing in October. They cryptically link to <a href=\"http:\/\/DearWorld.ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DearWorld.ai (opens in new tab)<\/a>, a website with letters from an anonymous whistleblower who \u201ccan\u2019t stay silent any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The letters, which ironically seem ChatGPT-generated, warn of a white-collar job apocalypse and the deindustrialization of the Rust Belt playing out on a global and permanent scale. They say AI is slowly eroding our critical thinking skills as we outsource tasks like writing emails, summarizing articles, and independently exploring ideas to chatbots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cOver the coming weeks, I\u2019m going to demonstrate, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we are marching mindlessly towards the end of humanity,\u201d one pseudo letter says. \u201cThe next five years will determine whether AI serves humanity or enslaves it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">But who was behind this website, and what did they want?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Last month, the mystery company hit San Francisco with another campaign: ads for <a href=\"https:\/\/nurtureos.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">NurtureOS (opens in new tab)<\/a>, a fictional AI parenting app that promises to raise the optimal child through constant surveillance using smart home technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cYou\u2019re a bad parent. Rather anticlimactically, it\u2019s a Las Vegas-based company that\u2019s hoping to get customers for its hybrid human\/AI receptionist product.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cWe wanted to explain our vision of selling both humans and AI to the world in a quick way that gets a reaction and gets eyeballs and changes the narrative,\u201d said Nathan Strum, CEO of Abby Connect. \u201cThe goal wasn\u2019t to instill fear but to start a conversation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Yet Strum said he challenged himself to think of the most twisted ideas he could put on San Francisco billboards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThey\u2019re replacing our therapists, they\u2019re replacing our friends, and so we thought, what is the holy grail of things you just cannot outsource that we could create a fake app around?\u201d Strum said of the genesis of the fake AI parenting app. \u201cThe crazy thing is, some people actually believed it was a real app, which shows where everyone\u2019s head is at.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The idea did not seem far-fetched to some. \u201cThere is absolutely no chance this won\u2019t happen sooner or later. The economic incentives are there,\u201d one Reddit user commented on a thread about the ads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mildlyinfuriating\/comments\/1oym6rq\/parenting_by_ai_anyone_else_heard_about_this\/?share_id=E9Ppi2jerinISt0tiEOeL&amp;utm_content=1&amp;utm_medium=android_app&amp;utm_name=androidcss&amp;utm_source=share&amp;utm_term=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">in r\/mildlyinfuriating (opens in new tab)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Inspiration came from recent rage-bait marketing campaigns that have inspired viral reactions, like Artisan\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/04\/07\/the-real-person-behind-san-franciscos-hated-anti-human-ad-campaign\/\" data-post-id=\"8f31246d-02ba-4126-8c3e-e0766d1f4de7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stop hiring humans<\/a>\u201d billboards and Cluely\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/07\/18\/cluely-startups-roy-lee-columbia-cheating-viral-tiktok\/\" data-post-id=\"8f4d7d80-c5d0-42a8-a898-7802739ef713\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCheat on everything\u201d<\/a> tagline. Ads for the AI wearable companion Friend were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/style\/friend-ai-subway-ads-new-york.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">vandalized on the New York subway (opens in new tab)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The marketing trend is so rampant that Oxford University Press declared \u201crage bait\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/corp.oup.com\/news\/the-oxford-word-of-the-year-2025-is-rage-bait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">word of the year (opens in new tab)<\/a>, defined as content that\u2019s designed to elicit outrage by being provocative or offensive. He said Abby is combining the efficiency of AI with the intelligence of human receptionists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Small businesses that use Abby can sign up for an AI receptionist instead of a human one to answer customers\u2019 calls. But if a caller has to repeat a question or the AI senses frustration, a human receptionist parachutes in to take over the conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Strum said Abby employs around 60 receptionists, some of whom are being retrained into more technical roles and receiving higher salaries. The rest of the tech industry, he said, isn\u2019t thinking about the role humans will play in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Abby, which has been selling human receptionist services to small businesses since 2005, launched the AI product in June. Strum said some clients are paying for a hybrid service in which a human answers the phone and an AI agent later steps in to help with scheduling and taking orders. He added that specialized clients like dentists enjoy having AI receptionists because they can be trained on domain-specific knowledge that their human counterparts lack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Abby isn\u2019t seeing increased sales from the ad campaign, but Strum said he\u2019s playing the long game.
