{"id":82372,"date":"2025-12-05T05:22:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T05:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/82372\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T05:22:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T05:22:07","slug":"lifeguards-rescue-dog-swept-out-to-sea-near-the-san-diego-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/82372\/","title":{"rendered":"Lifeguards rescue dog swept out to sea near the San Diego coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pup that was swept out to sea by a rip current must be feeling doggone lucky after her unlikely rescue off the San Diego coast.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie, a black Labrador retriever-mix, stole away from the home where her owners were staying during a football game last month, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said in a social media post. <\/p>\n<p>While her owners tracked Sadie down the coast using an Airtag on her collar, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/02\/us-news\/california-surfer-comes-face-to-face-with-10-foot-shark-after-it-tosses-him-from-board\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surfers in<\/a> Ocean Beach alerted lifeguards that a dog had been swept into the rip current near the jetty, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Lifeguards at Ocean Beach rescued a dog that was nearly swept out to sea. AP<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/01\/us-news\/us-coast-guard-nabs-16-mexican-immigrants-crammed-aboard-sailboat-off-the-california-coast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Coast Guard<\/a> boat and lifeguards searched the area after the dog disappeared into the channel, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge joined the search on personal watercraft and spent more than an hour looking. <\/p>\n<p>Then, they were told they\u2019d only look for another 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that point, I kind of just said, \u2018Please let us find this dog,\u2019\u201d Alldredge said.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that Labs are water dogs and fighters, there was a good chance Sadie was still alive, Smerdon said. <\/p>\n<p>They were called off, but while they were still far out, Alldredge thought he saw something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got closer and closer, and then we realized it was her and we were pretty excited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie, a black Labrador retriever-mix, was rescued by lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge. AP<\/p>\n<p>They raced over to Sadie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was super happy to see us, for sure,\u201d Smerdon said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadie, who was about a half-mile (0.8 kilometers) offshore near South Mission Beach when she was found, was transferred to a surf boat that brought her to shore, where she was reunited with her owners, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message, Sadie\u2019s owners, Alexis Barcellos and Brandon Valdez, said they would be forever grateful.<\/p>\n<p>Barcellos recalled in the video that just as the search was being called off, she heard a call on the radio that they had <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/03\/lifestyle\/lost-dog-found-2000-miles-away-from-home-after-running-away-during-a-storm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found the dog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie\u2019s owners, Alexis Barcellos and Brandon Valdez, thanked all those involved for having their dog rescued from being swept away into the ocean.
