FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — As the days in Central California get colder, doctors are seeing more cases of influenza and RSV in children.<\/p>\n
Doctor Amy Evans with Dizon Pediatrics said this season she’s concerned about the newest flu variant – Subclade K.<\/p>\n
“It started in the UK, it’s now in Canada and Japan. And it just got reported in Texas,” said Dr. Evans.<\/p>\n
The new strain’s symptoms are known to be more severe – and the doctor says a flu shot can help prevent their intensity. But that’s not the only way you can protect yourself.<\/p>\n
“Hand washing is critical. Using Lysol everywhere is really helpful. If you’re sick at home, stay at home and try not to go visiting,” said Dr. Evans.<\/p>\n
Another serious concern this season is RSV.<\/p>\n
The Fresno County Department of Public Health said cases in Central California are low, but Valley residents should know RSV cases are on the rise across the state.<\/p>\n
Doctor Evans said one in six children who are not vaccinated for RSV will contract the disease and about a third of them will land in the hospital.<\/p>\n
But there’s another helpful defense.<\/p>\n
“About two and a half, three years ago, this new vaccine came out, and it is a complete game changer. It’s called Beyfortus,” said Dr. Evans.<\/p>\n
That vaccine was also recommended for infants following a CDC advisory committee vote in June.<\/p>\n
It comes at a time when the safety of other vaccines is being questioned by Health and Human Services secretary, Robert Kennedy, Jr.<\/p>\n
On Friday, a panel of CDC advisors- appointed by Kennedy– are scheduled to vote on whether to change guidance on administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth.<\/p>\n
The Doctor said a bad cough with congestion is usually a sign of RSV, and a dry cough with a sore throat are the most likely symptoms of the flu.<\/p>\n
