{"id":83171,"date":"2025-12-05T20:26:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T20:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/83171\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T20:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T20:26:09","slug":"san-francisco-sues-food-giants-over-addictive-processed-foods-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/83171\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco Sues Food Giants Over \u201cAddictive\u201d Processed Foods | Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                Key Takeaways<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco is suing 10 major food companies, claiming they sold harmful ultraprocessed foods on purpose<\/p>\n<p>The city argues these foods contribute to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and more<\/p>\n<p>Experts say as much as 80% of what kids eat comes from ultraprocessed foods<\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Dec. 5, 2025 (HealthDay News) \u2014 San Francisco is taking some of the country\u2019s biggest food companies to court, claiming they knowingly sold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/health-news\/nutrition\/why-ultra-processed-foods-dominate-the-grocery-store-and-what-it-means-for-your-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultraprocessed foods<\/a> that harm health and are designed to keep people eating more.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, announced Tuesday, argues that products like sugary drinks, packaged snacks and processed meals have fueled rising rates of obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/a-to-z-health\/diabetes\/diabetes-overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diabetes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/a-to-z-health\/cardiovascular-diseases\/coronary-heart-disease-645474.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a> and other illnesses in the city and across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have reached a tipping point in the scientific research about the harm of these products,&#8221; San Francisco City Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/sfcityattorney.org\/aboutus\/thecityattorney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Chiu<\/a> said at a news conference. &#8220;These products in our diets are deeply linked to serious health conditions, imposing enormous costs on millions of Americans and cities and states across our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The suit was filed in San Francisco County Superior Court and targets 10 major companies, including:<\/p>\n<p>Kraft Heinz<\/p>\n<p>PepsiCo<\/p>\n<p>General Mills<\/p>\n<p>Mars Inc.<\/p>\n<p>The Coca-Cola Company<\/p>\n<p>Nestle USA<\/p>\n<p>Kellogg<\/p>\n<p>Post Holdings<\/p>\n<p>Mondelez International<\/p>\n<p>ConAgra Brands<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit claims these companies used aggressive marketing to promote foods that contain high levels of sugar, salt, unhealthy fats and chemical additives, even though research has linked these products to chronic disease and shorter life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>Ultraprocessed foods generally include packaged snacks, flavored chips, sugary cereals, soft drinks and ready-to-eat meals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;About 75% to 80% of what children eat comes from these ultraprocessed foods, and 55% to 60% of what adults consume come from them,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/adv_profile\/barry-m-popkin-phd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barry Popkin<\/a>, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina, said to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can\u2019t compare how people ate during and right after World War II and in the decades before with how we\u2019re eating now,&#8221; Popkin added.<\/p>\n<p>Some nutrition researchers say the lawsuit could be a turning point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/laura.schmidt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Schmidt<\/a>, a professor at the University of California San Francisco, told NBC News that &#8220;Up until now, it has felt like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I&#8217;ve been talking about childhood diabetes for a couple decades now. The rates have continued to go up. Kennedy Jr<\/a>. has publicly linked these products to chronic disease and plans to remove artificial dyes and additives from the food supply as part of his \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d plan.<\/p>\n<p>Health experts continue to warn that ultraprocessed foods are shaping the nation\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re unhealthy. The diet has a huge amount to do with that.
