{"id":84060,"date":"2025-12-06T15:02:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/84060\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T15:02:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:02:19","slug":"devastating-about-80-fresno-residents-face-homelessness-next-month-after-federal-housing-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/84060\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Devastating.\u2019 About 80 Fresno residents face homelessness next month after federal housing cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\tWhat&#8217;s at stake?<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as the Trump administration directs money away from long-term supportive housing, preferring transitional housing alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>In what could be a sign of things to come, two Fresno supportive housing projects will close next month following federal funding cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpocc.org\/stasis-center\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Stasis Center<\/a> on 4135 E Olive Ave, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpocc.org\/falcon-court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon Court<\/a> on 4415 N Clark St \u2014 two supportive housing projects managed by Turning Point of California \u2014\u00a0 will close in January due to a lack of funding, according to a Fresno County <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/11kOmFmg_2eytmdz1oFirFOh8rK7kki4j\/view?usp=sharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1CbDAgeikXeP0uX6qtqfTYaBdgbc8jAbB\/view?usp=sharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in November<\/a> capped funding for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudexchange.info\/homelessness-assistance\/coc-esg-virtual-binders\/coc-program-components\/permanent-housing\/rapid-re-housing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rapid Re-Housing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudexchange.info\/homelessness-assistance\/coc-esg-virtual-binders\/coc-program-components\/permanent-housing\/permanent-supportive-housing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Permanent Supportive Housing<\/a> programs \u2014 two bedrock outlets disabled and homeless people have been relying upon for years to help them transition into a life of stability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The federal government is, instead, ordering local housing officials to prioritize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/14\/nx-s1-5553561\/homelessness-housing-funding-trump-administration-hud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">short-term, transitional housing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Katie Wilbur, the vice chair of the Fresno Madera Continuum of Care, told Fresnoland that the \u201csudden, radical\u201d shift in priorities doesn\u2019t align with the perspective of local housing officials. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudexchange.info\/faqs\/1545\/what-is-a-continuum-of-care\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Continuum of care organizations<\/a> are tasked with applying for and disbursing federal housing funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that is not the right solution for everybody, which is why we have always prioritized permanent supportive housing,\u201d Wilbur said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the FMCoC spent most of its funding on Permanent Supportive Housing solutions. The <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1CbDAgeikXeP0uX6qtqfTYaBdgbc8jAbB\/view?usp=sharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new HUD plan<\/a> now directs the local continuum of care groups to spend no more than 30% of federal funding on the programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between the drastic cuts and shutdown-related delays, the Fresno-Madera region expects to lose about $5 million in funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely disruptive and very disappointing\u2026 \u2018devastating\u2019 is really the word,\u201d Wilbur said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Turning Point has already given their properties\u2019 80 tenants a 60-day notice to leave. Wilbur said the sites will close on Jan. 31.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s news brings the total number of scheduled Turning Pointe property closures in Fresno <a href=\"https:\/\/fresnoland.org\/2025\/07\/10\/two-fresno-homeless-shelters-will-close-by-end-of-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by next month to four<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deputy County Administrative Officer Amina Flores-Becker said the shifting nature of both state and federal housing funds has sent local leaders scrambling to find alternative sourcing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities could convert the rehousing projects into transitional housing \u2013 but that change isn\u2019t simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an added caveat that those dollars for transitional housing are competitive,\u201d Flores-Becker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The added pressure on local jurisdictions like Fresno comes as city and county officials, who say they can\u2019t cover the staggering funding gaps.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a practical solution,\u201d Flores-Becker said. \u201cNobody has excess housing dollars laying around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez told Fresnoland that, as the Newsom and Trump administrations walk away from homelessness funding, local groups have an \u201copportunity\u201d to take the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Chavez said an agreement was in the works between the county and city that would outline, among other things, clear goals and responsibilities each jurisdiction has in solving local housing issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to take that to all the rural communities, all 15 cities, to participate,\u201d Chavez said, adding that such an agreement would be a first for California. \u201cIt\u2019s never been done before.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chavez said the agreement has a tentative release date for early next year, and that his \u201cnumber one priority\u201d for 2026 is to get the plan off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity to really recalibrate and redefine what the homelessness solutions are going to do,\u201d Chavez said. \u201cI\u2019m confident that we\u2019re going to get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRelated<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s at stake?
