The Long Beach Police Department has launched a new interactive crime dashboard to help community members interested in learning more about public safety in the city access statistics.<\/p>\n
The dashboard, according to a Friday, Dec. 5, LBPD news release, includes information about crime statistics and reporting citywide and will replace the department\u2019s current method of sharing crime data through PDFs published each month on its website.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn support of our ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability and community-focused information sharing, we\u2019re proud to announce the launch of our new public-facing Crime Dashboard,\u201d police Chief Wally Hebeish said. \u201cI would like to recognize and thank the many employees from the Police Department, and Technology and Innovation Department for the work they have done to make this a reality \u2014 their work is a testament to their commitment to enhancing safety citywide.\u201d<\/p>\n
The dashboard includes four main categories: city overview, crime trends, beat explorer and extract.<\/p>\n
On the city overview page, residents can research detailed summaries of crime trends in Long Beach, with the ability to filter by date range. The overview page, the city said, shows total offenses and breaks them down by specific categories.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor each data point, users can view the total offenses within the selected time frame, compare it to the same statistic from the previous year, see the percentage change, and find the average number of offenses per day,\u201d the city\u2019s news release said. \u201cAdditionally, a table provides a more detailed view of each individual offense type, along with a monthly trend chart.\u201d<\/p>\n
The crime trend page allows users to filter information by time range, division and offense type \u2014 and includes a monthly trend chart depicting the most common offenses broken down by beat and division.<\/p>\n
The beat explorer page \u2014 as the title suggests \u2014 provides information about specific LBPD beats and shows crime density across those beats.<\/p>\n
On the extract page, users can filter custom data sets for download.<\/p>\n
LBPD will continue publishing its monthly crime statistics PDFs through January, the city said. Previously published documents will be available on the LBPD\u2019s crime statistics archive website.<\/p>\n
The dashboard, meanwhile, will refresh daily \u2014 with a 21-day delay for crime incident reporting, the city said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe dashboard provides the same information in a more modern, dynamic and user-friendly format,\u201d the city said. \u201cWith customizable views, filters and visuals, users can now analyze crime data in ways that best suit their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
