FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A suspect is in custody after a standoff with Fresno Police in the area of Clinton and West avenues in Central Fresno Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
Fresno Police tells Action News that an officer approached a man who was acting suspiciously in an alley just behind me, and after a brief struggle, the suspect then shot at the police.<\/p>\n
Police said two officers shot back as the suspect began to flee.<\/p>\n
At least one of those rounds hit the suspect, who then barricaded himself in a nearby carport.<\/p>\n
Action News was on the scene before his arrest, which happened more than an hour after the initial shooting and witnessed police trying to keep the area clear of any traffic as SWAT negotiators and other authorities arrived on scene.<\/p>\n
The suspect, however, did eventually surrender without further incident.<\/p>\n
The exact condition of the suspect has been released, but police say they are stable and currently recovering at Community Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n
While officials say the officers involved were not injured, at least one of them did come close.<\/p>\n
“That round actually struck the ball cap that the officer was wearing. By the grace of God, we did not have an officer injured tonight, but it did strike his ballcap,” said Deputy Chief Rob Beckwhit.<\/p>\n
Police say both officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave, as is procedure.<\/p>\n
They have not identified the suspect other than that he is a male in his early 40s.<\/p>\n
