But in the end, they couldn\u2019t convince a jury.<\/p>\n<p>Rucker, 35, was charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2025\/01\/24\/mistrial-declared-in-oakland-murder-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">murdering 34-year-old Romell Wright<\/a> in an Oakland shooting. But after two different juries looked at the evidence and failed to reach a verdict, the Alameda County District Attorney\u2019s Office dropped the murder case at a November hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Rucker was sentenced to 32 months in prison for a gun charge related to a firearm found during his arrest last year, court records show. He didn\u2019t contest that charge at his trial.<\/p>\n<p>Rucker was admitted to North Kern State Prison on Dec. 2, records show.<\/p>\n<p>Wright was shot and killed around 8 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2024, on the 1700 block of 89th Avenue in East Oakland. He and others had spent the prior night crowded into a tiny sedan, allegedly using drugs, when prosecutors claim that Rucker showed up and confronted Wright about an outstanding debt, then shot him.<\/p>\n<p>The defense attorney, Pinaki Chakravorty, argued that Rucker was erroneously identified as the shooter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2024\/12\/09\/they-shot-my-brother-oakland-murder-trial-will-hinge-on-witness-id-versus-rumor-mill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">based on a rumor that started<\/a> when one witness overheard Wright\u2019s fiancee say the name \u201cEli\u201d at a crime scene and repeated it to police as fact.<\/p>\n<p>Chakravorty said the dual mistrials prove that there wasn\u2019t enough evidence to convict. Prosecutors argued for a six-year prison term for Rucker on the gun charge, court records show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth juries were very smart and took their jobs very seriously,\u201d Chakravorty said in a message to this news organization. \u201cWithout question, though, a man lost his life and a family is grieving.
