In 1984, when Mandalay opened on California Street, it was aggressively residential. Now the restaurant\u2019s been recognized with an <a href=\"https:\/\/sf.eater.com\/2024\/2\/28\/24085699\/james-beard-2024-americas-classics-award-winners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">America\u2019s Classics Award<\/a> by the James Beard Foundation, and locally loved for its pioneering tea leaf salads and zingy ginger lemonade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">The corner restaurant, cast in bright yellow with Disney-looking lettering, is super laidback. While not the first Burmese restaurant in the city, Mandalay\u2019s the longest-running now. Service staff here is warm, casual, and almost goofy in a family friend kind of way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">The 1 Muni bus runs from downtown right by Mandalay.
