{"id":91736,"date":"2025-12-12T11:11:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T11:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/91736\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T11:11:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T11:11:23","slug":"the-four-san-diego-concerts-you-totally-shouldnt-miss-this-week-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/91736\/","title":{"rendered":"The four San Diego concerts you totally shouldn\u2019t miss this week! \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stick Men, featuring Tony Levin, with Andre Cholmondeley\u2019s We Are Ants To Them, featuring Tom Griesgraber<\/p>\n<p>Apart from former San Diegan Nathan East, it\u2019s difficult to think of another bass guitar great who has performed on more standout albums by a more diverse array of artists than Tony Levin.<\/p>\n<p>A Boston native whose first gig of note was as a contrabassist with New York\u2019s Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Levin will perform Sunday in San Marcos with Stick Men, the fiery prog-rock instrumental trio he has co-led for the past 18 years.\u00a0The band is named after his 2007 solo album, \u201cStick Man,\u201d which features his dazzling playing on the Chapman Stick, an all-neck, body-less instrument that has 13 strings and is played with all 10 fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Levin has been a key contributor to albums by Robert Fripp, Bryan Ferry, Carly Simon, Lou Reed, Buddy Rich,\u00a0 Laurie Anderson, James Taylor, Joan Armatrading, Warren Zevon, Cher and Phil Collins. His voluminous list of credits also includes collaborations with David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Herbie Mann, Genesis, Dire Straits, Liza Minelli, Peter Frampton, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls, Kenny Loggins, Yes, Ivan Lins, Todd Rundgren, Pink Floyd and hundreds more.<\/p>\n<p>Levin is featured on songs you have heard many times, even if you never realized it was him you were hearing. That\u2019s Levin on Peter Gabriel\u2019s \u201cSledgehammer,\u201d \u201cShock The Monkey\u201d and \u201cRed Rain\u201d; Paul Simon\u2019s \u201c50 Ways to Leave Your Lover and \u201cLate in the Evening\u201d; Joan Armatrading\u2019s \u201cWalk Under Ladders\u201d and \u201cI Love It When You Call Me Names\u201d; King Crimson\u2019s \u201cElephant Talk\u201d and \u201cThrack\u201d; Alice Cooper\u2019s \u201cWelcome To My Nightmare\u201d; John Lennon &amp; Yoko Ono\u2019s \u201c(Just Like) Starting Over\u201d; David Bowie\u2019s \u201cWhere Are We Now?\u201d and a good number more.<\/p>\n<p>For good measure, Levin is also the co-creator of \u201cFunk Fingers,\u201d which utilizes the chopped-off tips of drum sticks as bass guitar picks to achieve a uniquely percussive attack.<\/p>\n<p>He is now on tour with Stick Men, whose July concert here at The Bornemann Theater mixed group originals with such King Crimson favorites as \u201cRed\u201d and \u201cThe Talking Drum.\u201d Levin also performed two sold-out 2024 shows here at Humphrey\u2019s Concerts by the Bay with the incendiary King Crimson offshoot band BEAT.<\/p>\n<p>His seventh solo album, \u201cBringing It Down to the Bass,\u201d came out last year, followed this year by Stick Men\u2019s new EP, the very aptly named \u201cBrutal.\u201d This month sees the publication of his newest photography collection, \u201cThe Book of BEAT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. (Courtesy San Diego Troubadour)<br \/>\nSan Diego Troubadour 25th anniversary concert, with The Bastards, the Zzymzzy Quartet, Dolly\u2019s Revenge, Chuck Schiele\u2019s American Grind, Zavala Sol and Blame Betty<\/p>\n<p>A labor of love since its inception a quarter-century ago, San Diego Troubadour was founded as a free monthly newspaper to chronicle folk and roots music. It has since expanded to provide invaluable coverage of a broad array of performers from many genres.<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic decline in advertising caused by the 2020 pandemic shutdown forced the Troubadour to become an online-only publication. But its tenacious publishers, Liz Abbott and Kent Johnson, have tirelessly forged ahead with their labor-of-love periodical.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to showcasing countless San Diego solo artists and bands, the Troubadour has also featured articles written by some of these same musicians, including Bart Mendoza, Sue Palmer, Eric Lieberman, Wayne Riker, Sven-Erik Seaholm, Peter Bolland, Lauren Leigh Stucky and Jose Sinatra.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s 25th anniversary party will be both a celebration and fundraiser for the plucky Troubadour. The headliners, The Bastards, is a San Diego super-group that features Jeff Berkley, Tim Flannery, Shawn Rohlf, Ben Zinn, Danny Campbell and Patrick McClory.<\/p>\n<p>5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. Their show here will be your only chance this month to hear \u201cO Holy Night\u201d and \u201cSilver Bells\u201d performed alongside \u201cDiggin\u2019 On James Brown\u201d and \u201cKnock Yourself Out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. She performed two concerts this summer with her famous musical family \u2014 led by her father, mariachi legend Pepe Aguilar \u2014\u00a0at the nearly 18,000-seat Hollywood Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1ngela is a five-time Latin Grammy nominee who released her first album when she was 8 years old. She specializes in romantic ballads and sings with authority. To date, her recordings have received nearly seven billion global streams.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles native is now on tour to promote here 2025 album, \u201cNadie Se Va Como Lleg\u00f3\u201d (\u201cNobody Leaves As They Arrive\u201d), her first since her marriage last year to fellow Latin-music singing star Christian Nodal.
