The goal was to take the most stimulating \u2014 or aggravating \u2014\u00a0fights on tech Twitter and transfer them to the stage. Mission accomplished.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Substack CEO Chris Best wore a Santa hat as he introduced the event at Bimbo\u2019s 365 Club in North Beach. It was a festive touch on an otherwise rage-baiting evening meant to promote the kind of heterodox thinking and writing that has taken off on the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThis strange and wonderful mix of people is something very special,\u201d Best told hundreds of attendees seated around two podiums in the center of the venue. \u201cIt\u2019s also what I love about San Francisco, even if some of our debaters flew in to hate on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">And hate on it they did. In the first bout, British writer Sam Kriss took on Pirate Wires founder\u00a0Mike Solana on a question of fundamental interest: Is SF back?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Solana argued that SF is indeed on the upswing. He parroted Mayor Daniel Lurie\u2019s Instagram talking points \u2014 business is coming back, crime is down \u2014 and argued that, unlike other purported liberal hellscapes, San Francisco is trying to clean up its <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/12\/07\/san-franciscos-street-poop-problem-worse\/\" data-post-id=\"861452bc-a2b6-4833-ae03-35fc9a9812a8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brown-stained streets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Not that it was all warm and fuzzy from Solana, who called out progressive Supervisor Jackie Fielder and her \u201cderanged barista friends\u201d in City Hall for being \u201cgenuinely malevolent,\u201d while throwing out an R-word for good measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Kriss, on the other hand, stole the show by bashing SF in every way he could, at once dodging the matter of whether the city is improving and imploring the audience to question what we can really call progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cIt feels like being trapped in a kind of Playmobil toy town that\u2019s recently been assimilated by the Borg,\u201d Kriss said. \u201cSpending any amount of time in San Francisco is \u2014 I\u2019m sorry \u2014 a crushing and miserable experience, because this city actively militates against everything that\u2019s good in ordinary human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A theater marquee reads \u201cSUBSTACK PRESENTS THE UTOPIA DEBATE\u201d with people gathered under string lights outside the entrance at night.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1366\" height=\"2048\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"block lazyloaded\" style=\"color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 1366 2048'%3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw=='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765630866_276_-S3840x5757-FPNG.png\"\/>Entry for the event (and champagne) was free. | Source: Courtesy Vikram Valluri<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">He bemoaned the cringeworthy AI mottos plastered all over the area\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/12\/04\/re-bad-parent-las-vegas-company-plastering-fake-ads-sf\/\" data-post-id=\"ebb33175-20a8-4297-9aee-b5d54d6b392c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">billboards<\/a>, tech\u2019s appropriation of MAGA, and the millionaires who inject themselves with <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/09\/14\/everyone-has-chinese-peptide-dealer-now\/\" data-post-id=\"508486fc-028f-4d68-8a7a-f2a3369731e7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese peptides<\/a> and live without bed frames. Whatever culture is being created here is rotten, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThe tech industry is the only Bay Area subculture to have never produced any of its own music,\u201d he noted. \u201cInstead, your contribution to global culture is software for churning out AI-generated crap. Your version of Jefferson Airplane or the Dead Kennedys or E-40 is, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/conormurray\/2025\/11\/20\/apparently-ai-generated-song-honoring-charlie-kirk-goes-viral-but-its-far-from-the-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">We are Charlie Kirk (opens in new tab)<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">By the end of the 20-minute verbal sparring session, most in the audience were loudly cheering against the city they presumably live in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In short, Solana got his ass kicked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The rest of the debates were muted in comparison, but here were the results as judged by the audience. Should robots take our jobs? Yes. Should superbabies be allowed? No. Can AI have taste? No.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Despite the theme of utopia spurred by futuristic cities and technology, the event seemed to be an attempt to harken back to the past. From the Frank Sinatra impersonator to the butlers pumping soap in the bathrooms and the red-hued venue itself, the affair was a relic of midcentury urbanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Substack, the company branded as \u201ca new economic engine for culture,\u201d was attempting to make two points at the same time: that today\u2019s culture is both progressive and conservative \u2014 that the best is ahead of us, and also behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">This is the tension Substack can\u2019t help but confront: The software that makes the company possible pushes San Francisco \u2014 and the world \u2014 away from what it was. It exposes people to new media and demolishes their attentional capacity to read it. It makes people understand each other, and fight about it.
