FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Electric motor scooters and bikes have become a popular way of transportation.<\/p>\n
But that popularity has created concern for Fresno Police.<\/p>\n
“We are seeing an emerging trend that there’s more collision involving e-bikes than before,” Fresno Police lieutenant Anthony Dewall said.<\/p>\n
Authorities want to urge the importance of safety when riding an E-bike or scooter.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement says wearing a helmet is required by law in California for people under 18 and highly recommended for adults.<\/p>\n
Ron Chakov says the type of electric bikes range, making the electric transportation an in-demand commodity.<\/p>\n
Chakov has noticed the popularity with E-Bikes and young teens.<\/p>\n
“Parents with the younger generation, in general, you know, they just have to teach them to kid of be aware of their surroundings and not just think one-sided,” he said.<\/p>\n
Electric scooters are also popular.<\/p>\n
Clovis Police say just last week, a car and e-scooter rider collided.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, there was a rear end collision that occurred in the south bound lanes of Clovis Avenue. The vehicle was pushed into the cross walk, east bound onto Santa Ana and collided with the e-scooter rider,” said Clovis Police officer Nicolas Carrillo.<\/p>\n
Officer Carrillo says the rider on the scooter was sent to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to be ok.<\/p>\n
Clovis Police say they’ve seen a rise in collisions with electric bikes and scooters.<\/p>\n
“You have to follow all the rules of the roadway. Including stopping at stop signs, stopping for red lights and most importantly is following the flow of traffic,” Officer Carrillo said.<\/p>\n
These e-bikes and scooters can exceed speeds that’s not legally permitted.<\/p>\n
Officials say before getting on an e-bike or scooter, you’ll want to check with what the DMV has permitted being safe.<\/p>\n
