{"id":9402,"date":"2025-10-17T09:06:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T09:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/9402\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T09:06:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T09:06:14","slug":"los-angeles-subway-extension-delayed-to-next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/9402\/","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles subway extension delayed to next year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The much-anticipated extension of one of <a href=\"http:\/\/ktla.com\/tag\/la-metro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:LA Metro\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">LA Metro\u2019s<\/a> underground subways has been delayed to next year due to issues with testing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The first of three Metro D Line extensions into west Los Angeles was scheduled to open later this year, expanding the subway nearly four miles with three new stations along Wilshire Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Construction of Section 1 of the extension is 98% complete, but earlier this week, Metro officials announced that testing of the next extension \u201ctook longer than expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For years, the plan has been for the first part of the extension to open in late-2025, although an exact date has never been formally announced. Now that timeline has shifted several months, with Metro officials saying it is anticipated in \u201cWinter 2026,\u201d presumably early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In addition to the testing issues, Metro\u2019s contractor is also completing \u201ccivic improvements,\u201d which includes the construction of new sidewalks, curbs and gutters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The D Line was closed in its entirety earlier this year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/busy-los-angeles-subway-line-230453147.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:more than two months;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than two months<\/a> to allow for crews to work on communications lines and power systems to connect the extension to the rest of the underground system. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/los-angeles-subway-line-reopening-200531697.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reopened in July;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reopened in July<\/a> with anticipation building for the ultimate opening of the first subway expansion in decades\u2014not counting Metro\u2019s underground light rail lines.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/metro-d-line-construction.webp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"&lt;em&gt;Crews continue work on the LA Metro D Line extension project in West L.A. (LA Metro\/The Source)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But this week\u2019s announcement has thrown cold water on that anticipation, with many voicing their frustration online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhy can literally NOTHING in the city get built on time? Where is the accountability?\u201d one Reddit user posted in the dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/LAMetro\/comments\/1o7p2ro\/laist_the_opening_for_the_first_part_of_la_metros\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:LA Metro forum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">LA Metro forum<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m annoyed, to say the least,\u201d another user wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The frustration among transit users and enthusiasts stems from a growing list of ongoing projects being delayed in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A plan to close an eight-mile gap in the existing biking and walking path <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.net\/projects\/lariverpath\/#documents\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:along the Los Angeles River;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">along the Los Angeles River<\/a> has run into delays and cost overruns, with construction expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/lapublicpress.org\/2025\/10\/la-river-metro-path-delay\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:pick up again next year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">pick up again next year<\/a>. The long-awaited LAX automated people mover, a project that connects to LA Metro but is managed by Los Angeles World Airports, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/lax-people-mover-delayed-again-231454379.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:delayed countless times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delayed countless times<\/a> and is now scheduled to open some time in 2026 as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Metro has also experienced major success in recent months and years and it continues to actively expand its system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In September, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/travel\/la-metros-long-awaited-pomona-extension-welcomes-first-riders\/amp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:A Line extension into Pomona;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">A Line extension into Pomona<\/a> began service, further extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/riders-soon-la-metro-edge-215933948.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:world\u2019s longest light rail line;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">world\u2019s longest light rail line<\/a> into new cities with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/la-metro-opens-4-stations-023723702.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:four new stations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four new stations<\/a>. That project, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/foothillgoldline.org\/construction_authori\/construction-authority\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority<\/a>, was delivered on time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The LAX\/Metro Transit Center, one of the most significant and crucial projects for the system\u2019s future, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/no-longer-car-lax-163040165.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:officially opened in June;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">officially opened in June<\/a>, providing the closest train connection to LAX yet\u2014and one day connecting directly to the airport via its people mover vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/l-a-metro-announces-opening-date-for-much-anticipated-regional-connector\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Metro Regional Connector;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Metro Regional Connector<\/a>, an underground tunnel project which rerouted and simplified existing lines in the downtown area and included three new underground stations, opened in June 2023 to much fanfare. That project was also delayed several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With many ongoing projects running into issues, frustration and anxiety has been building for Metro users and supporters, particularly as the city inches closer to the Summer Olympics in 2028\u2014an event city leaders have said they would like to be mostly car-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This delay of Section 1 on the D Line appears to precede another delay further down the line. The 2.6-mile Section 2 extension, which will include two new stations on Beverly Drive and in Century City, appears to also have been pushed back from 2026 to 2027. The final 2.56-mile Section 3 extension, which would create a terminus at the Westwood\/VA Hospital near Sawtelle, was planned to open in 2027 as well, although a delay has not been announced.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/04\/24-1163_map_DLineExt_Proj_Segments_Update_jk_final-copy.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"Metro D Line extension project reaches construction milestone\u00a0\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"932\" height=\"720\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3deb84a4d958f4cf8eee9df5c225d25f.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Metro D Line extension project map.
