A 1-year-old boy died Sunday in Hayes Valley after being struck by a vehicle driven by someone he knew, police said.<\/p>\n
Officers responded at approximately 10:37 a.m. Sunday to Hayes and Webster streets regarding a collision with injuries, the San Francisco Police Department said Monday. <\/p>\n
Investigators determined that a vehicle driven by someone known to the child was backing out of a residential garage and struck him on the driveway, according to police. The driver\u2019s relationship to the child was not revealed.<\/p>\n
Medics transported the toddler to a hospital, where he died.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a father, it\u2019s unthinkable what happened,\u201d Mayor Daniel Lurie said Monday morning at a news conference announcing an executive directive to establish a citywide street safety initiative. \u201cMy heart is broken for that family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis tragic incident appears to be isolated, there was no risk to the public, and there is no evidence of criminal action,\u201d the SFPD said in a statement. \u201cOur hearts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased child.\u201d<\/p>\n
