The Fresno Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, officials announced.<\/p>\n
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, and the primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.<\/p>\n
The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a person\u2019s ability to drive. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, police said.<\/p>\n
Officials said drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n
Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.<\/p>\n
