story FOX26 first brought to you after the large, mysterious and ornate lanterns were found in Fresno<\/a>, with nobody seeming to know where they came from.<\/p>\nLast update on mysterious lanterns found by high-speed rail (FOX26)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The lanterns were found by a High-Speed Rail contractor in a room in the old Belmont underpass on June 9th.<\/p>\n
They are described as 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, with mostly red and green paint.<\/p>\n
We spoke with the President of the Fresno City and County Historical Society, Elizabeth Laval, back in August who gave several theories on the mystery:<\/p>\n
They might have been put up around nearby Roeding Park to decorate for the holidays.They are old-fashioned lamps that were used to light up Fresno’s streets, but this theory was dispelled, since we found out these lanterns had electric plugs.Before WW2, there had been a Japanese-style exhibition in Roeding Park, but after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, these lanterns were taken down.The most plausible theory was that the lamps were placed right inside the tunnel to light the way.<\/p>\n
Laval confirmed she was working with the City to preserve and identify these treasures.<\/p>\n
