OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. \u2013 Oakland County has confirmed its second measles<\/a> case of 2025, this time involving a child.<\/p>\n

The pediatric measles case was announced Tuesday, Dec. 16<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Oakland County Health Department said<\/a> people who visited DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital\u2019s Emergency Department in Commerce Township on Dec. 7 between 7:20 p.m. and 11:10 p.m. may have been exposed to measles.<\/p>\n

Health officials are working with the hospital to identify people who possibly were exposed and connect them with resources and recommendations.<\/p>\n

The first measles case in the entire state this year was announced in March in Oakland County<\/a>. Since then, there have been about 30 cases statewide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Symptoms<\/p>\n

Symptoms usually appear seven to 14 days after contact with the virus, but can take up to 21 days to appear.<\/p>\n

Those infected can spread measles before they notice symptoms. Common measles symptoms include the following:<\/p>\n

High fever (may spike to over 104\u00b0F)<\/p>\n

Cough<\/p>\n

Runny nose<\/p>\n

Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)<\/p>\n

Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth (Koplik Spots)<\/p>\n

A rash that starts as flat red spots on the face at the hairline, then spreads to the trunk, arms and legs three to five days after the symptoms begin. Small, raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots.<\/p>\n

Measles vaccine<\/p>\n

Health officials emphasize that getting the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best protection against measles.<\/p>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, two doses of the measles vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles if exposed. One dose is about 93% effective. Full protection develops about two to three weeks after vaccination.<\/p>\n

If someone unvaccinated is exposed to measles, getting the vaccine within 72 hours can reduce the risk of developing the disease.<\/p>\n

Anyone who has been vaccinated in Michigan can check the immunization portal<\/a> to see if their records are available.<\/p>\n
