(Photo by Salvatore Giametta)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdmts.com\/about\/meetings-and-agendas\/board-directors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Metropolitan Transit System\u2019s Board of Directors<\/a> Thursday, unanimously reelected San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn as chair and El Cajon City Councilman Steve Goble as vice chair.<\/p>\n<p>The two will serve two-year terms through December 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Whitburn was first appointed as an alternate member to the board in 2021. In January 2023, he was appointed as a primary member and simultaneously elected as the board\u2019s vice chair. Five months later, he was elected chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve made meaningful progress in strengthening transit safety, expanding access and delivering cleaner, more sustainable transportation options for our region,\u201d Whitburn said. \u201cI\u2019m honored by the board\u2019s confidence and look forward to continuing our work to make transit an even more reliable and welcoming choice for all San Diegans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goble has served on the El Cajon City Council since 2016 and was first appointed to the MTS board in 2017. In May 2023, he was elected as vice chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMTS has achieved the second-highest ridership recovery among major U.S. transit agencies,\u201d Goble said. \u201cOur commitment to safety and cleanliness has truly paid off. I\u2019m proud to work alongside such a dedicated team that continues to earn national recognition for innovation, safety, and for building a transit system that benefits everyone across our region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under their leadership, MTS passed an annual ridership of 80 million for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as began a comprehensive overhaul of the agency\u2019s security.<\/p>\n<p>The MTS Board of Directors is made up of 15 local elected officials \u2014 four from San Diego, two from Chula Vista, and one each from the County of San Diego and the cities of Poway, Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa, National City, Lemon Grove, Coronado , and Imperial Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013City News Service<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT\n\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stephen Whitburn.
