The biggest step in Fresno Yosemite International Airport\u2019s $150 million airport expansion project opened Wednesday with a new two-gate terminal. The city held a celebration before travelers departed on flights to Guadalajara, Mexico.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are building an airport worthy of the community it serves, investing in infrastructure that strengthens our economy, and creating a world-class travel experience for all who pass through our airport,\u201d Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said at the ribbon cutting.<\/p>\n

The new terminal \u2014 located to the right past the security screening area \u2014 is not limited to international flights. Planes departed for Denver and San Diego on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

The goal, Dyer said, is to attract more flights and boost the local economy. Last year, 2.6 million passengers traveled through FYI.<\/p>\n

The opening of the 98,000-square-foot terminal is part of the airport expansion, which in recent years has included a new parking structure, an expanded security screening area, and a new baggage handling system.<\/p>\n

Still to come: a new air traffic control tower, runway reconstruction, additional gates, and another parking garage.<\/p>\n

Even the bathrooms are high tech. The faucets feature a soap dispenser and hand dryer.<\/p>\n

The new terminal also features several art pieces, including a sculpture titled Flight of Seven Continents by Polish artist Mirek Struzik<\/a>, suspended from the ceiling at the terminal\u2019s entrance.<\/p>\n

Dyer also acknowledged Henry Thompson, the former city airports director<\/a> who died in July. The city will unveil a tribute to Thompson at the terminal in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Henry\u2019s legacy. I feel him in this building with us today. I know he was watching over us, and I know he is smiling down upon us,\u201d said Fresno City Councilmember Tyler Maxwell.<\/p>\n

New Restaurants<\/p>\n

Los Amigos<\/a> will open an airport restaurant in the new terminal next month.<\/p>\n

Owner Ricardo Flores called it \u201ca new adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing here at the airport is something really big for us, to show people the food we make with our heart,\u201d Flores said.<\/p>\n

Flores said operating at the airport means going through more security, but it is nothing they can\u2019t handle. The menu will be smaller than at its other Fresno location at Blackstone and Shaw avenues.<\/p>\n

Einstein Bros. Bagels, located in the lobby, and Ike\u2019s Love and Sandwiches, located past the security gate, have already opened. Mad Duck will open in the original terminal next month.<\/p>\n
